I'm a newbie to the boating world,i just picked up a 1996 skeeter everything looks great but the trolling motor will not go. I know there power to it cause when i switch to continous it will run,but only if i give the prop a spin by hand, it will also shut off when commanded. When i switch it manual position i dont get any movement.Wondering if i could get a few tips, it woud be greatly appreciated.

The first thing you need to do is make sure you have a good battery (as in fully charged and in good condition). Just because it was on a charger does not make it a good battery. Only load testing or hydrometer testing can prove that. Check all wiring and connections for evidence of corrosion. Do you have a 24 volt motor and are using only one battery? If this is a 24 volt motor do you have the two batteries wired in series as they should be. If you have them in parallel you still have only 12 volts. If this is a 12 volt motor, remove the prop and check for fish line wrapped around the shaft. If everything checks out ok, the motor may have water intrusion and the bearings are tight.

You can check the bearings by simply turning the prop by hand. If the prop turns hard the bearings are tight. There is no fix but to replace them. If there has been water intrusion, plan on junking the motor as the internal parts will be covered with rust. You won't know that until you open it up and look. But for heavens sake, before you do that, make sure everything OUTSIDE the motor, including wiring and batteries is as it should be.

Trolling motors draw alot of current as well. Depending on the location of your batteries wire size needs to be increased for long runs. Try GenuineDealz.com if you need parts n wire. 200% savings over west marine and the like.

Well i took off prop took a look at inside everything looked ok no water damage. Now what else should i be looking for,are there other possible fuse or relays. It's a all- terain minn kota 36lb. thrust if that helps.
