I purchased this boat about 5 years ago. I have changed the spark plugs and rebuilt water pump twice. But that is the extent of the knowledge. I was wondering if there is a fuel filter and air filter that needs to be replaced. I was out in the boat last weekend and I did let it run out of oil. The warning light never came on. So I put some more in and it would start back up but when I would put in gear it would die. So I assume that when put under load it was dying and that it would be a fuel problem. What do you guys think>

Re: 1997 merc outboard 115 hp

I have a 1997 200 hp Mariner that should have the same oil injection system you have. When the reservoir on the engine gets low you should get a beeping signal indicating that reservoir is low by a float switch. If you didn't get a warning and ran it empty you could have caused engine damage. The first thing I would do is manually fill the engine reservoir with oil to not do any more damage. Just adding oil in the main reservoir probably isn't going to work because air pressure in the engine reservoir won't let the oil transfer up to the engine reservoir. I ran mine low once and had to loosen the cap to fill it and get it to quit beeping. Good luck. Fix the warning system too.
