water pump failure

I have an old 68 chrysler 6.6 hp motor. Its a good little motor, but the water pump is failing. What causes these things to not pump? The housing doesnt look too bad of condition, but it wont pump water. I pulled the lower unit off and used a drill and it will only pump water out of the rubber grommet about 2-3 inches. And its not very powerful. Is it just the inside of the housing wearing bigger and bigger to basically where its too large to create a good suction?

I was just curious and reason is because a new wp housing for this motor is hard to find and the ones you can find are expensive.

Would there be any kind of compound I could line the inside of the pump with to kinda fix it?

thanks

Re: water pump failure

IS there an impeller in there? If so, it's taken a "set" and is worn out and in need of replacement. As long as the housing isn't pitted and cracked, you should only need a new impeller.

yes, i replaced the impeller to begin with. There are no cracks, but it is a bit roughed up on the inside.

It is not smooth at all.
