Raising boat off trailer

I want to add a couple bunkers to my trailer. The boat is a 16 ft fiberglass bowrider and the existing bunkers are only 5 feet long. So basically the forward 11 feet of the boat is being supported by the front bow roller and the front keel roller. I plan on welding on some plates to the trailer crossmembers to bolt the additional bunkers to. While I'm a it, I might as well change the existing bunker carpet. What would be the best way to raise the boat off the trailer in order to do this work. I suppose only raising one side and working one side at a time would be safest. All I have are a few jack stands and a floor jack. Can I use the floor jack if I put a 2X6 between the jack and the boat? Where on the bottom of the boat is the best place to put the jack? I don't want to start raising the boat and have the jack go right through the bottom. I'm also afraid the jack will slip and the boat will come crashing down.

Re: Raising boat off trailer

yeah.....the resto section might have to get its own set of faqs if it gets big enough.......

ok.....best to take the boat off the trailer for a few days till the work is done..... i dont know about you.....but sticking my neck between a bunk and a boat suspended in the air kinda makes me squeemish !

ok.....trailer your boat to the spot to store it.....ie along side your house....drive way...ect...ect...

drop trailer tounge dowm low.....put a block under the transom of the boat...
lift trailer tounge up high......block keel of boat....move trailer foward.....tounge down low.....block free area of the keel...move old blocks....repeat ....repeat....repeat till trailer is free of boat....

kinda walk it off.....by lifting and lowering the trailer tounge and blocking the boat till you get free.....

one guy can do it.......

be safe....take no chances.....you are working with a lot of weight here.

if you are unsure about somthing ....ask here

cheers

Re: Raising boat off trailer

I've done it so many times its become a 15 minute exercise.
My boat is 20' and heavy.

Chock wheels ( not on grass).
Lower tongue, jack the back up with a wooden block under the keel at the transom until it lifts off the bunks at the back.
Get a couple of jackstands under the rear corners and lower the jack.
Use wooden pads between jackstand and glass.

Raise the tongue , jack the front of the trailer up higher and block the keel, lower the jack , tongue and see if you have space under the front of the bunks , if so pull the trailer fwd as far as possible and re block the keel behind the axle , it should now be clear, a couple of side stabilizers should be added.

Getting Boat Off Trailer

you don't need stands.

1/you can lower the tongue to the ground. i would get some 6x6 or old railroad crossties cut the +- 12 inches, now block up the transom. 2/

Raise the tongue of the trailer the back of trailer will drop away from trailer. this is the tricky part. between the cross braces of the trailer block the keel lower trailer, boat will be suspended on the blocks.

3/ pull forward, lift bow again, and reblock i a different place. repeat until trailer is out from under the boat.

4/ to reload, just reverse the procedure.

if you were just working on the bunks, or painting the bottom. you could just do the first 2 steps.
