The boat has been removed from freezing area and Im wondering if I run it once a month with the earmuffs if this would be the same as if it were in the lake being run once a month. 1997 Mercruiser I/O
I could still add some fuel stabilizer as well.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but if you spend a couple minutes and fog the engine, there will be no need to run it once a month. The cooling system doesn't have to be drained if it doesn't freeze. The rest of winterization like the oil changes in the engine and drive, pulling the drive and checking for water, etc. is nothing more than preventive maintencance that should be done once a year anyway. It's just that most of the country freezes in winter.

The boat runs great and Im just trying to avoid taking it to the dealer. Every year they seem to come up with something else that costs alot of money. There has only been about ten hours since the last fluid change.

If the boat is sitting in the yard for the next six months,in a non freezing climate, would it be good to run it once in a while with earmuffs, versus not running it the whole time???

Boat sitting in driveway in non freezing climate

Boat sitting in driveway in non freezing climate

Do I need to start it every so often with earmuffs. Is there any other recomendations. I will not be putting back in the water for about six months, but could start it up once a month to lubricate everything as if it was still in the water. Freshwater only, no ocean usage.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to start it once a month but I do not think it is necessary. I would just put some stabilizer in the fuel and run it into the carb. If you only started it once or twice, I would think that would be more than sufficient.

That's Why they call it Preventive Maintance,......

Tell you what if it's fresh water used, rust won't build up. Don't drain it.

Your absolutely sure it won't freeze, sure start it once and a while, leave the battery disconnected.

Also leave it full of gas.

if you live in florida or a climate like florida where I live. I thought it was a non freezing climate too. Last year it go to 30 for four hours and cracked my block. If at any point it gets close to or at freezing please winterize/.

When i went to boot camp at lackland air force base it was 20 for weeks snowed also.

Guys said they don't ever remember it freezing there.

I was also at key west on vacation had freezing weather palm trees were frozen.

All the boats were never winterized ever, was alot of new motors sold that year.

Seems to me the peace of mind of knowing it's right would be worth the price. Something about an ounce of prevention be better than a pond of cure. If you feel that the dealer isn't being fair, maybe it's time to look for another mechanic. Winterizing isn't that difficult anyway, unless it's a warranty issue, maybe you could do it. Not trying to hurt anyone's feelings.
