250 gallons came to $878.72 = $3.55 and that was just last week

Thinking about getting one of those multi-fuel stoves. They will burn wood pellets, olive pits, cherry pits, corn, and some grains. I've burned wood since 2000 and I'm just down right tired of the mess, the fetching, the cutting, splitting, stacking, and the sore back. Then doing my best not to knock my self out of work due to an injury from the work involved.

Having 400 gallons delivered today @ 2.82/gal.
Also fired up my pellet stoev for the first time, I installed it last week. 8 tons of pellets to be delivered this weekend.

Since I'm all stocked up now, I bet it's gonna be an unusually warm winter.

I run natural gas to heat my home but was curious, how many gallons a year would it take to heat your home on average.

I'm in Canada and I run about .32-.35 cents a cubic meter but it costs about $2200-$2400/year to heat my home and hot water.

Is oil comparable to that? (realizing most of you are in warmer climates as well)

We are a family of 5 in a 2500sq ft colonial built in 1992 in north NJ. It has a fair amount inulating and double pane windows, 4 zone heat, programable thermostats, etc. Last year it took about 1200 gallons to heat the house and make hot tap water.

Just to compare, I'm not far North of that so climate is close. At 1200 gallons at $3/gallon, it would be $3600/year.

I'm $2400 CDN a year for the same. Only difference is 3100sq ft built in 2001 with family of three. So I'd guess with our oil prices at about 25% higher in Canada, natural gas is still approx. 40% cheaper. (By the way, its standard in most houses here now, will oil typically only in rural areas)

So far, all the guaranteed contracts are above $4 /gallon- or the point where electricty is cheaper via our heat pump.

We have a dual fuel furnace in older 2500 sq ft contemporary so have been juggling the oil versus electricity decision.

We may try to get some oil on the daily delivery rate depending on the market or use electricity. Been watching crude fall, but no revision of any heeating oil contracts have followed yet.

Seems like we used about 60 gallons a month for heat last winter.

I you have a contract type of service, there is nothing to prevent you from calling a local dealer and getting a market price fill.

I used to have a contract service, but their price was $0.90/gal above the local dealer, so I cancelled and went with the local dealer. Now I have a budget price plan, and pay what the daily price is for the oil at day of delivery. Hopefully this will work out to my advantage in the long run.

Sorry, I can't really answer that question. I've lived in this 1200 sqft home for 9 years now. I've used my woodburner about 90% of the time. I used the oil on days that a wood fire would make the house too hot. Last time I bought oil was 2004. That comes out to about 60 to 65 gallons a year in oil. I figure if I did heat 100% with oil, I would go through about 600 to 700 gallons per season. Heating season for my area starts in late Sep thru late May. Output of my oil burner is 85K btuh.

When the temps are 15*F out, the furnace will run 10 minuets on and off for 50. I don't think that is too bad for a house built in the 50's. I have re-insulated and installed double pane glass. I do like the house at 80*+ with the woodburner,,,,,especially my wife :D

Re: What are you paying for home heating oil?

I just got a flyer in the mail - $3.29, although I don't use oil.
I bought propane last month at about $2.90 / gallon in WV, .70 cents cheaper than MD last year.
