Have a 94 115 mariner. A few mo back, the key could not turn the motor off..had to disconnect with the kill switch. Recently, when I would try to start the motor but it wouldnt fire, there was a humming noise that would continue for a few seconds, then shut off. Friday, I fired it up, ran it for a while, and when I killed it, the humming noise started...couldnt stop it, so I disconnected the battery. when I tried to reconnect, the engine is trying to fire...no key, kill switch off etc.

Not sure if this is starter, ignition, both, or something else? Any help would be appreciated!!

Re: Haunted 115 Mariner?

First clue is that the motor would NOT turn off with the key switch.

Second clue, humming noise that would NOT stop until you disconnected the battery.

Third clue, as soon as the battery was re-connected the motor turned over.

All have the key switch in common. Replace it.

And hope that you haven't killed your starter, leaving it stuck ON while you ran the boat because of the bad key switch.

It is possible that the starter relay was stuck, however that would not explain NOT killing the engine when the key was turned off.

Re: Haunted 115 Mariner?

I replaced the iginition switch, and when I try to reconnect the battery the engine is still trying to start. I double checked the switch to make sure it was off, kill switch is also off.

Any suggestions for a next step?

Thx

If the humming noise is the starter, are you checking it visibly? Then the solenoid is sticking and need to be replaced also.

Re: Haunted 115 Mariner?

I had the ignition switch and the solenoid replaced...guy tested it and confirmed it was stuck. Boat ran great for a few weeks, then today, same thing....almost.

First, the alert started beeping like the motor was low on oil....checked and it was fine, but then could not turn the motor off w the iginition switch, but when I turn key to off, beeping stops but motor kept running, until I pulled the kill switch.

Tried it several times and it now does the same thing every time....starts and runs fine, but the alert continues to beep until I turn key to off, but it will not stop the motor...have to use the kill switch.

Possibly just a bad new ignition switch?

Re: Haunted 115 Mariner?

You may have two separate problems.

You can troubleshoot both problems with an Ohms Meter, if you have one.

Ignition problem may be a defective new switch, wrong switch, or wrong installation. On the back of the ignition switch you should find two black wires, one of them solid black, the other is black with a thin yellow line along it. The black with yellow trace is from the ignition module, grounding this line to the black line is supposed to happen when the ignition switch is turned OFF and shorts the ignition signal to ground, very effectively killing spark thus killing the engine. Confirm that the black wire is grounded, and confirm that the ignition switch connects these lines when in the OFF position. A problem within the switch OR the black wire NOT going to ground on the battery and the engine will not die.

Second problem, oil alarm.
There is a magnetic switch in the bottom of the oil tank, sometimes the magnet becomes UN-glued to the float, falls near the switch, making it think that you are low on oil. Test by unplugging the two blue wires under the oil tank. Again, use the Ohms Meter to check continuity between the two blue wires from the switch, if the meter reads continuity then order a new oil tank from your dealer, it is NOT repairable. You may operate the craft with this switch unplugged IF you are Religious about checking your oil. Running out of oil would BE BAD, very bad, for your engine.

Repost any questions and the results of your testing.
