Johnson 1957, FD 11, 18hp

Starts and runs fine, however;

Water discharge is not discharging water after one minute in neutral.

Does this model have a thermostat that did not get warm enough to kick in?

Does the motor need to be in gear to activate the impellar?

Could it be clogged?

Motor was tuned up 4 months ago.

Thanks,

Nicholas

I have the same engine. There is no thermostat. Don't run it if there's no discharge. Is the LU FULLY under water, halfway up the lower leg? Make sure you have enough water. If you do then you need a new impeller. It does not need to be in gear and should pump water after 5-10 seconds or so.

If you run it and the head gets too hot to touch shut it off. I was testing my FD-12 today in the barrel and as there's no thermostat it runs cool. You could easily touch the head after 5 min of idling.

Thanks Steve, I do have it submerged past pump housing, below water discharge port.

Do you have any recommendations on a model specific REPAIR manual?

I have the Selocs. Some folks frown on them but they will get the job done and if you get another engine it will usually cover it also.

The LU is very easy to remove on the fd-11. Should only take you 15 min to get the LU off and pump opened up.

Ok, this is where I am at pros, I put the garden hose to the water intake and it does discharge out the water discharge port. However, when the engine is turned on the water does not discharge, regardless if the engine is in neutral, forward, or reverse. Is there a schematic online that I could view to replace the impellar if you think that is it? Also, is replacing the impellar r&r the same as r&r of the water pump?

Thanks again folks!!!

Some people call it the waterpump some call it the impeller. When you take lower unit off motor there is a waterpump housing that slides over the shaft.Take housing off and under it is the impeller.Take note of any parts and assemble back in order.Ipersonally coat the base of the housing(impeller housing) with avation gasket sealer to help give a good seal on those old motors or even on newer ones.Get a manual even seloc or clymer is better than nothing atall, you should be able to get a impeller from iboats or napa or the dealer.Very easy to do if you follow the instructions in the manuals.

that is a very easy one to do. On the side of the leg you will find a cover held on by two screws. Take it off and you will see the shift linkage. Take one of the two bolts out completely. I find the bottom is easier. They may be screw heads not bolts but take it out. Take the bolts out that hold the lower unit on and it will slip off. The water pump is on top of the housing and the drive shaft goes through it. Any problems I am just across the river from you on the St Louis side.

And the only reason it works with the hose is the water pressure is pushing it through, not the water pump. take it apart and inspect it, you probably have a shredded impeller and they are like $15 to buy a new one.

Attached is a pic of the impeller i took off my 1954 Johnson 25 this summer. Note the upside down impeller housing on the left and the bits of broken impeller in it. it did not pump water at all when i got it. note, this pump is different from yours as you will have a water tube that goes up to the engine from the housing, this one does not.
