I have seen spray cans of carb. cleaner but can't remember ever seeing cleaner in a can that you could soak the carb. in. Is the spray cleaner the best way to go or is soaking the parts the preferred method? Sounds like the spray would be quicker but I want to do it right the first time too. Thanks, Rick.

I use Berrymans it comes in a gallon can at my auto parts store with a dipper basket in the can. About 20 dollars.

BOTH methods work well, HOWEVER, Both methods require due diligence by the mechanic doing the job.

ALL passages MUST BE blown clean and clear of all particles/chemical cleaners.

DO NOT SOAK plastic parts, some plastics melt. Do not soak aluminum parts overnight, many 'soak' chemical will eat away (if left more than a few minutes) the factory anodizing (protective coating).

Since the majority of my carb cleanings are done dockside on customers craft, I prefer to use Wal-Mart Super Tech spray carb cleaner. I've found it to be the cheapest on the market at 1.25 a can AND a better cleaning solvent than much more expensive 'name brand' cleaners. Frankly, I was surprised to find this at Wally World.

I soak it in gas and spray power tune carb cleaner in all the passages and that seem to work every time

The carb soak cans that you buy at autoparts places have a chemical that actually etches stuff away. It says on the can to not soak things longer than 20 minutes. I accidentally forgot I had a carb body in there and found it a year later. All surfaces felt like sandpaper. It was ruined. That is why they also tell you to rinse it in water when you are done.

I still use the stuff, it works great, but I am much more careful now.

Charlie, how are you doing your dockside cleanings. Do you remove the entire carb or just the jets or are you spraying the stuff through the choke valve?

if you are working on and outboard, NEVER spray anything into the carbs, except PRE MIXED fuel and or seafoam, when they are mounted on the motor. these chemicals, either, carb cleaner, strips the lubrication of the internal guts, that require lubrication.
