I have a 68 Fabuglas Tri hull 16' with a 55hp evinrude on the back. I think I would need to change to a diff prop. It has a good top speed but the acceleration isn't the fastest. Also I need some sort of pylon, how hard are they to install?

Hey TD. I really dont know I will have to look when I get the chance. I just got the boat a week or so ago. You must live on Iboats you seem to be the first to respond to my posts... or maybe you are stocking me?!?!? LOL

What is the max HP rating of your boat? Your outboard should be at least 70% of the hull's max HP rating for good performance.

55HP for a 16' tri-hull seems a bit underpowered to me.

Its not heavy at all. SO maybe thats why its only got a max of 70?

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

to get the correct prop we really need to know what you have, and what your WOT rpms are with that prop.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

I wake boarded behind a 73 glasspar with a 65 hp evinrude all last season

It wasnt a performance monster. But I tought my sister, and her husband and my wife how to wakeboard with this boat. It will work for a begginer, anyone who has snowboarded lots, or gets good at wakeboarding will soon be looking for something with a bit bigger wake.

My prop is a 13X19 (I think)

Unless you weigh 400 lbs and your board of choice is a snow plow you should have no trouble getting out of the water behind that boat.
Pylon -- Honestly, I don't know if it would be worth the hassle. I'm sure the wake isn't much, even if you put a 6' pole on there you're going to go from 1' of air to 13".
I'd just get one of those pulley/harness mechanisms for the two tow hooks on either side of the OB and go boarding.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

you actually bring up a good point.....

I had custom built a pylon. It stood about 6 feet 6" on the boat. It was nice for getting out of the water, and the rope feels much better pulling from the top rather than down. In the end though I got a better wake by using one of the mentioned pulley things hooked onto the tow hooks on the back. I think it helped put the weight were it needed to be better.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

It should be able to pull you up if it has a quick get up and go. I see you said it takes time to plane out. One problem i have ran into when towing beginers is that if you cant pull them out the water fast they will not be able to get up (chicks like you to pull them up slow though so fast is not always better for light people)Big people need you to pull them out fast so they can get up. I have also noticed that when i had the hook up on the tow hooks there were some people that could not get up but once we raised the tow line they could get up. The height helps to pull people out and on top of the water, cause with the low hook ups it just pulls them through the water not up and out. But that is just for some people.

I am 6'2" and weigh about 200. I dont have trouble wake boarding. But I have only boarded behind nice boats with towers. But I never had a problem getting up but they were really quick boats.

What does the pulley set up look like?

the pulley has two hook ups that hook on to the back of your boat and has a swivel in between so you can go to outside of both sides of wake. if not pulley you have to tie to 1 side or other.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

dude you are not going to want to wakeboard behind that boat. with an outboard its super dangerous and i would definitly not reccomend it. you would need a tenfoot pole to even get up on a board and the boat will be doggin it. sorry man.

Shinok87, i don't know where you get your info, but it is not true, we use to wakeboard before it was cool. you just loaded the stern heavy, use an low pitch prop, you're not looking for speed you are looking for constant speed and a good wake. that's why wakeboard boats have bladders. with out them, they are just ski boats.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

wakeboard boats are V-Drives, ski boats are direct drives. My boat without the ballest full is still not a great ski boat, the hulls are very different. you can ski or wakeboard behind either but the bigger hull of a wakeboard boat is for making a wake, the smaller, flatter hull of a ski boat is to not make a wake. But to answer the original question, you can wakeboard behind a boat with an outboard motor if you can pull the rider up it will just be harder to learn. I tried learning on my friends outboard boat (which he boarded behind) and could not get up, Im 6'5" 220, when I bought my malibu I got right up, of course the tower and the way it pulls you up instead of forward makes a world of differance. Now all I do is wake surf, it does not hurt when you fall LOL, unlike a good faceplant.

Almost everyone that goes out on the boat with me knows how to wake board. I learned behind a VLX it was an awesome boat. Really easy to pop out of the water.

Re: Possible to board behind my boat?

I'm 6'2 205 lbs and have ski'd behind a 50 hp motor, but that was on a 14 ft chrysler cadet boat. Much similar looking than yours but smaller. Getting up was the hardest, but after that still plenty of speed. 55 hp on that will be pretty tough. I would definitely add a pylon. With that boat it would be easy to build your own. Get a 7 foot tube, 4 I bolts , a flange to attach pole to(attach the flange to a piece of plywood. Put velcro on the back of the plywood if you have carpet in your boat, this way the pole won't move around at the base and you won't have to drill into your boat.), 3 nylon coated steel cords, some fasteners to attach to the I bolts and to your ski hooks on the back of your boat. Get two twist tighteners to attach to the back cords to tighten them up. Get one tie down wratched(heavy duty) that goes around through the front of your boat and attaches to the nylon cord. This way you can use the wratchet to tighten it down. http://www.robertsski.com/webpgws/pylon1.jpg

this picture gives you the idea on the front. the back is just attached to your ski hooks. I used wrachtet tie downs for all three of my anchors. Easy to tighten up. Looks nicer with the nylon covered steel cord.
