I want to thank everyone who responded with info on how to restore the Gel Coat's finish on my 1978 Ranger V178. Everyone says I must have repainted the boat as there is no comparison. The finish is a medium to dark brown base with gold metal flake. I wroked my way up from 360 wet sand paper to 2,000grid. Then I used 3 M rubbing compound and got down to the gel coat finish looks great.

Here is my question: I can still take a small bit of rubbing compound and with a micro cloth can rub on a finish area and dependiing on how hard I rub, I can still see a ton of black what I am assuming is oxidation on the cloth. Does this mean that I still need to take some 2000grid wet sandpaper and continue working the finish?

What, no pics.

You can do that even on a brand new surface, it just means the compound is working, it?s supposed to be removing a small amount of material when you use it. The coarser the grit, the more it removes and of course the opposite is true for the finer grit compounds.

How do I know I've got the finish at it's peak?
