Wrong lower unit on motor? 63' merc 650

Hi Everyone.
I'm a bit puzzled. Something is going on that is not in the books.

I have a 63' merc 650 that I noticed the reverse lock was not working....dropped the lower to investigate.

It appears that it has the wrong lower unit on the engine! It is the only thing I can figure....the shift shaft is to low...the lower and motor worked OK under load in F-N-R OK.

I found a glipse of a lower unit in my repair manual that shows a lower with the shift rod flush like what is on this one.....

But there is no way this lower is going ot work the reverse lock cam.

Can anyone please confirm?

I love answering my own questions! :)

Sometimes when I type stuff out it dawns on me.....


I think we are missing a piece here.

Yes, missing a piece......had one in storage.....ignore post.

Missin' the spoolpiece that goes between the brass lockout cams and the lockout mechanism in the center section, eh????!!!!

Yes, that was it.

The motor did not have one when I did the impeller job.....I happen to had one out in storage though. It's nice to have parts motors laying around.

She is locking now.
