Can anyone tell me what the year and horsepower of my motor;
Serial Number R8157590? It is fully camouflage and I can not tell if it is a Evinrude or Johnson. It is a V4. It is on my jonboat and runs very fast, almost to fast for a jonboat. Thanks!

Re: Year of motor?

I am new to this forum; I am not trying to hijack this post but I have a similar question. I have just aquired a 1978 Skeeter bass boat with what I believe is 65 hp Johnson engine. There is a tag on the mount that has the numbers 75ELR77. My research revealed that this is a 75 hp 1977 engine however on the engine cover it has "Johnson 65". Is there any other place that I can find the engine's identification? :confused:

Look for the welch plug on the main block. Silver and the size of a quarter (or thereabouts) Check the numbers and letters on that and let us all know.

You may not want to hijack this thread, 2wings, but you did anyway.

Do you need some help starting your own thread?

Re: Year of motor?

My jonboat is a 18 ft flat bottom Alumincraft. When it was running well, it would run around 65 mph. Yes I know that is to fast for a jonboat, but it is fun to drive. The transom has been modified to accomidate the large motor. It has a miss and I am going through changeing coils, plugs, and etc...
I bought it used last year and do not know what, if any PM's have been performed.

I got the model number by chipping off some paint, believe me it did not hurt it's looks. Model Number: J88MSLCER (the S might be a 5).

That sounds dangerous! You might want to verify the boats rating to ensure it is not overpowered as you will have insurance issues if so.
