Leaf Blower Won't Stay Running

I picked up an older (early 90's) Craftsman Leaf Blower from my dad. He just bought a new one and gave this one to me but said he had been having problems keeping it running, typically more so as the outside temp drops. First thing I did was change the spark plug. Then, after filling it up and hitting the primer bulb a few times I noticed that fuel was spewing out the center of the vented gas cap. I figured that shouldn't be the case and thought maybe too much air getting into the fuel lines. Bought a new gas cap. She started up but won't stay running once in half or full throttle. I was able to keep it going for between 5 and 10 minutes by manipulating the control knob. As it was in half or full throttle (didn't seem to matter which, same result) if it sounded like it was getting ready to die I would switch it back to full choke and let it revive and would let it "warm up" for another 5-10 seconds or so before moving it back to throttle. It would run for 15-20 seconds and I would have to repeat the same process over again, back to choke, into throttle, back to choke. Any suggestions as to what my first steps should be to pinpoint the problem?

that's an easy fix, it sounds like it was probably stored without stabilizer in the fuel.. remove the carb. take it apart and clean it real good, make sure ALL orifices are clean and clear, it sounds as if the high speed side of the carb is suffering, most of the time you don't need a kit for those, just a good cleaning from inside out.

+1

Very important to check your float and needle. Mine was stuck and it ran like CRAP when placed to high position. I popped the carb, pulled out float mechanism, pushed on the needle, gave her a good cleaning and vuala...Runs like a champ again. :D
It also happened to be a "Craftsman" however my model was also badged by several other manufactures........

I had the same problem with a 20 year old echo string edger. It never missed a beat in all it's life. Out of the blue, it wouldn't run without keeping it in some choke mode. But even then, you could tell it was running hot. (lean) I checked all the fuel filters and breather lines to the tank, then bought a carb kit. When I got done it would not work at all.

I took the whole thing down to the local guru. He went thru the carb again and 76$'s later it ran like always.

I think all this e10 gas is wreaking havoc on everything. I've never had problems with my small motors before, now within a few weeks my Honda Lawn mower starts running crappy as well as my string edger. I pulled the bowl on the lawn mower and it was full of gummy rust colored goo with a bit of free water at the very bottom. It's just been this last year that we have had e10 foisted up us.

Going to be a fuel issue,

Clean card, replace diaphram. Blow leaves.
