Mercruiser 5.0 wont start ( I Goofed Up)

I had the misfortune of letting a family member borrow my boat, unfortunately I was rather displeased with the condition when it was returned!
In my frustrations I accidentally crossed my positive and negative battery cables when connecting and now I dont get anything out of my boat!
When I turn the key on it does nothing not even the gauges!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP??!!!!! [/B]I am trying to sell my boat and have someone coming to look at it in a couple of weeks I need to get this fixed!!!

Heres a link for you to trace it down. You did push the button the red one on the motor.

A omc like 85' had 2 fuses i don't know your year.

There should be a circuit breaker (red button) on the engine somewhere, impossible to say without year and model 5.0 you have.
You could also have a square fuse on the starter that will blow.

The year is a 2004! I have tried pushing the red button and nothing happened! any other suggestions?
not sure on the model or where to look!
it is a 5.0l mpi the serial# is 0W012791

You have a charged battery?

You have a good connection at the battery?

You have a good ground on the neg cable of the battery?

You have it in neutral for sure, wiggle the handle.

You have the kill switch in.

Unplug the kill switch wires and leave them dangle with out touching each other or tape the ends till you find the problem.

There a fuse or breaker for the ignition on the dash?

All the above fails than FOLLOW THE LINK I GAVE YOU.

Could it be you blew out the coil, who knows?

You will have to go one bye one and check it off on the list, print it out.

Don s gave us the list to use, he took time out of his busy day, use it to your advantage.

My thinking, you blew a relay, or one wire burnt thru and has no connection.

I never asked you have power at all?

To the gauges?

Horn, radio?

the battery is brand new but since I crossed the wires I am going to take it down tomorrow to see if I burned it up!

And no I have absolutely no power at all, that is why I am having such a problem I cant figure out what in the world I did!
I even tried jumpstarting and still got no power!
I did check all the fuses under the dash! only found one burned not sure what it went to but I replaced anyway and still got nothing.
I will be waiting to hear back if you have any new info that might help.

That troubleshooting chart link that the Cheif gave you isn't going to help one bit if you don't have power to the dash.
I have ask this 2 times already.

WHAT ABOUT THE SQUARE FUSE ON THE STARTER ???????

You seem to only be looking for an EASY answer to something that isn't that easy to find.

I missed you had no power at all in the op.

So the chart ain't gonna help. I am getting old, just didn't see it.

The square fuse on the starter check it tomorrow.

Make sure the battery is disconnected before you fiddle with the starter.

Post back the result.

We will go from there, as always Don thinks with a clear mind.

Not all have the fuse.

No fuse and while you got the battery out, check the ground, follow the neg cable to the bolt it grounds to clean it good take it off and clean the ends.

The cable is still good?

The pos. cable is still good and clean.

With the battery still out check the connections at the starter.

Ive seen wires burned the ends off and not connected when the short occurs.

And i have seen that red button breaker go bad also from a short.

sorry for not responding earlier to the tip about the fuse on the starter! the answer is no I have not checked this for I did not know about ther being one there but I will do this tomorrow and get back with you on it!

The place that I bought the boat said that I may have burned up the battery or a solenoid! I will check the battery and the fuse on the starter before I assume it is a solenoid!

Again sorry, not very knowledgable on boats it is the first one I have owned and this is the first major problem I have had out of it!

He got a solenoid or the relay. Same thing really.

Roundish solenoid square relay.

Both do the same job but the mpi i believe is a relay.

And bye the way great motor. I would trade my youngest for one. Ha.

I have been pleased with it, though it doesnt seem to have enough umph in it to get me out of the water on skiis!!
I am not exactly a small person at 305#'s either..... lol
