Can anyone tell me how to remove my steering wheel? Doesn't look at all like an automotive one? Only steering wheel I've ever removed was from my 1969 Plymouth Barracuda......

Thanks in advance!

Re: Steering Wheel Removal?

Bear, should be easier than the Barracuda! Industry standard is a 3/4 inch tapered shaft with a lock nut. Nut is accessible by removing a cover plate over the center section of the wheel. Most plates are not screwed on and just pop off with some pressure from behind the spokes of the wheel. Once you have access to the nut, some will come off without tools. Just pull straight out. If it acts like it needs persuasion, put the nut on until it is flush with the end of the shaft. Find a dowel or some other block of wood that will only touch the nut and strike it with a mallet/hammer while someone else pulls outward on the wheel. A little PB Blaster on the shaft would not hurt. I do not know Bayliner specifics but maybe an owner will post. Good luck!

Thanks Willey Clay!

I figured it was like that... I'm down to the 3/4" and washer... I'll give the rest a go this weekend! Thanks again! Just wanted to make sure a special puller tool wasn't necessary...

Peace out!

Perchance does that Bayliner have Hydraulic steering? If it does, that is some expensive stuff you are beating on.

Soak it up with some good spray lube for a day or two before doing anything.;)

Bayliners are easy. Pop the center cap, take off the nut and washer, squirt some Kroil or Deep Creep in and let set for a day or so. If you have a large gear puller you can use it or you can just tap the spokes with a fiber hammer. If it is corroded, it may take a little more force. The shaft is tapered and has a key to position the wheel.

John
