Hi there,
I searched the iBoats forum for my particular problem and could not find one that involved something that I noticed with my alarm. The outboard is a 1999 115hp Johnson 4stroke with external oil tank.

I have only run the outboard with muffs when observing this problem. The problem is a fuel restriction alarm (1second on 1 second off repeat), but this only happens after 5-6 minutes at idle speed, I have left the alarm on for 5+ seconds and then put the revs on (both in gear and out of gear) and the alarm speeds to about half second on half off for about 2 seconds then it just stops, meanwhile there is no noticeable change in revs, smell or heat on the outboard. I have done the following to try and single out the problem; used premixed fuel at 100:1 ratio to see if the alarm stops, it changed nothing except a much smoother idle. I have also replaced the fuel primer bulb because I noticed that there was fuel sometimes coming out one side. I have also rang the boat repair shop that I usually use for checkups and such but they have been to busy to be able to help and suggested that the fuel pump is probably worn out and does not take in enough fuel at low revs (something along those lines.)

In 4 days we are going camping for 8 days to do some serious boating, so I am looking for some help or second thoughts on whether the engine could be run as it is or not. The reason I ask this is because exactly one year ago the outboard had the same problem but the alarm would go off after about 10 minutes at idle or only on very rare occasions, so I assume it has gotten somewhat worse. Should I drive to a further away boat shop tomorrow to get this fixed or is it something that can wait until afterwards.

I'd appreciate any help/thoughts!
Cheers and happy new years.

In your first paragraph, did you mean to say 4 cylinder, as opposed to 4 stroke?

I believe that the alarm that you are hearing is for VRO failure, an air leak in the oil line, or an oil restriction. Oil is not being supplied to your engine. Is your OMS disabled and you are premixing?

I forgot to mention it is 4 cylinder. Currently I am using premixed fuel for testing purposes and the alarm still comes on. The VRO is not disabled.

Cheers.

After speaking with some educated minds about this stuff I have decided to take it to a repair shop as I do not want to risk a complete engine failure.

That is a good idea as your motor is NOT a 4 stroke from your description and the '99 Johnson 115 does not have a fuel restriction alarm on it.

Any luck on your findings? I'm having very similar problems

I have a couple of problems and I'm looking for some help:

Problem #1:
At full throttle I start to lose power and I have to squeeze the primer bulb which is soft and it will pick right back up to normal speed running fine. It will stay hard for a little while and go soft again sometimes minutes later during the same test run. Any thoughts?

Problem #2:
I start the engine and within 3-5 minutes At low idle speed in nuetral and also when in gear at low speeds under 5 mph I will get an alarm that goes off ( 1 beep per sec. )This will continue until I rev the engine in nuetral or go faster than 10 mph in gear and then it stops. If I'm in gear going at a trolling speed and it sounds I can move the trottle and go faster and the beeps get faster ( 2-3 per second ) and then it stops beeping. The alarm has never sounded at speeds 10 mph or faster... Once the alarm goes sounds I can speed up and the beeps get quicker as I speed up. If I slow back down they get slower. But once I reach a certain speed around 9 - 12 mph they alarm stops..... I can run the engine at a slow a trolling speed and it will sound and then I can go fast and it will go off until I slow back down then within a few minutes of going slow again it will sound. Any thoughts?

Engine is a 1985 Johnson 90 hp.

Questions: What would make this alarm sound? Heat, Oil, water pump?

Here is the last work I had performed at the shop on June 24th, 2007:
1 - fuel filter 3/8" - $5.90
2 - KIT AY, F Pump&LMTR - $335
3 - KIT AY, Carb repair - $57.99 ( quanity 2 )
4 - Starter - $184
5 - Gasket V4 T-stat OM -
6 - Thomostat 130 Degr ( quanity 2 ) - $19.98
7 - Relief Valve Poppet - $2.19
8 - L77JC4 - Spark plug - $11.60 ( quanity 4 )
9 - Grommet OMC 321692 - $6.38 ( quanity 2 )

Mechanic Notes:
- Load tested battery it is O.K.
- Checked starter, it was drawing excessive amperage, replaced
- Checked fuel system, replaced several broken fuel clampsl
Test ran engine, excessive smoking due to several issues, replaced bad VRO pump, rebult carbs and repaired fuel leaks.
- Engine was running extremely cold, replaced thermostats.
- Engine runs much better now, shift and temp tested O.K.
- Engine is starting to have some internal wear.
Final Bill: $1297.57 ( ouch ) Engine ran great with no issues until August of 2009. I got 2 good summers and now I'm having the following issues mentioned above.
