Re: 5HP Sea King Oil mixture

Hello
I would like to know what the oil mixture is for a 1970-1971 Sea King air cooled outboard is. If the answer is chain saw oil. Could you tell me what brand of chain saw oil. From what I hear, there is different brands of oil for
different chain saws.I do not know if this is true or not. But when I bought a chainsaw about 30 years ago,the dealer told me to make sure that I used there brand of oil. Please help me on this.

I can't answer the mixture question with any authority, but it probably is 50:1. It would be easy to say that the guy wants to sell his own oil, but that is not necessarily the case. Some of that chainsaw oil comes in little bottles at a high price, with just enough in the bottle for a gallon of gas for their brand of saw. Oh, never mind, I see you said 30 years ago.....he was selling his oil. Besides, oil has changed since then.

All you ever wanted to know about two-stroke oil is explained here:

Re: 5HP Sea King Oil mixture from manual

Gas to oil:
This is for a 1970-1971 Sea King made by Clinton engines. This is straight out of the service manual .
The power head is lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. Use 1/2 pint of non detergent ,SAE 30, or Outboard motor oil with each gallon of regular gas for first tank with new or overhauled motor. 1/4 pint per gallon thereafter.
(It is up to you what you want to use)

Lower end:
The lower unit gears and bearings are lubricated by oil contained in the gearcase. SAE 90 EP automotive or a good Outboard Motor lubricant should be used. This is not grease.
Lubricant should be checked every 20 hours of operation .

Re: 5HP Sea King Oil mixture from manual

Glad you found an answer, Steve.

The 1/2 pint per gallon is 16:1 and the 1/4 pint mix is 32:1.

Recommended mix for those air cooled outboards varies all over the map, and much has changed since that manual was written.

One thing that has changed is the oil. TC-W3 oil is formulated to be optimum for water cooled 2 stroke engines. Special formulations for air cooled 2 strokes were not even on the market in 1971. Those oils are now available and specified for chain saws, weed whackers, etc, and are superior to TC-W3 for use in air cooled 2 strokes.

I suggest that you follow your manual as far as ratio is concerned, but use an oil specified for chainsaws, rather than non-detergent motor oil or TC-W3 outboard oil.
