I have replaced seals and bearings on this 1965 60hp Johnson and I could push or pull the shift rod and it would shift into and out of forward, netur and reverse. After I put it back together I could not get it to shift into forward. It would go into reverse and netural. I could get it to start into forward by useing a screwdriver in the junction port on the side and putting pressure on the shift rod. As soon as I release the pressure it goes into neutral. In checking shift problems on a 40hp Johnson the indication was a worn shift dog and possibly a forward gear. When I disassemble the prop shaft assembly what do I look for to confirm wear? Is this most likley the problem? What else should I look for?

are you sure the linkage went together properly, there is a groove in the shift rod, the bolt goes thru.

Here is a sample of a grossly worn out clutch dog. I don't know how they ran it so long as to get it in this condition. They will jump out of gear with nowhere near this much wear.

Look for similar wear there the dog engages in the gear.

Thanks for the info. Rods are connected properly so looks like I need to open it up and look at the clutch dog and gear.

Hold on! Before you take anything apart, have you tried turning the propeller by hand? If the dog lugs and the gear lugs are aligned, then it won't shift into gear as they will hit each other. Turn the prop a bit and it may pop right in once the lugs are offset...
