What appears to be the springs rear eye is actually a U-bend you just can't see the open end, but still I wouldn't think it should ride directly on nothing but a bolt, could there have been a rubber isolator of some sort missing? The front of the spring is a regular spring eye with a rubber bushing, but this rear one just seems like it could flop around?

That's known as a Slipper spring. It eliminates the need for a rear pivot link on the shackle. As the spring flattens, it lengthens, and the u bend moves backward on the shackle. Since the front is held in a bushing, the spring can not go anywhere. I have a set that doesn't even have the u bend. The rear is bent down slightly and it rides on the hardened rear shackle. A bolt below it keeps it from dropping.

This is a 'slipper' spring....

I submit that he is needing a replacement rubber bushing.

Re: Does this spring perch look right ?

There are four types of leaf springs found on boat trailers.
Double eye springs, much like those used on automobiles and these use hangers to allow movement as weight is applied.
Then there's slipper springs,
which come in two types, one as shown above in Rocky_Road's post, the other is similar but with a turned down end on the spring.
The last type is the C-hook spring which looks to be what the original poster has. They come in either turned up or turned down style rear hooks, a70's post above shows a turned up spring. This type originally either used a plain metal bushing to protect the bolt or a modern nylon bushing can be added. The turned down style rides on the frame or upper part of the perch and not the bolt itself.
When I encounter one as shown in a70's pic, I like to make up my own bronze or brass sleeves as a wear bushing, if not you can simply install a nylon spring bushing but they wear out much faster. If the bolt is without any sleeve and has been taking the pounding for some time, I'd replace the bolt and install a new sleeve or bushing.
How old is that trailer? That set up is pretty much gone these days.
You can also usually easily convert that set up to a eye to eye spring with normal hangers as well when it comes time to replace the springs.

Cool thank you for that information, it's a 1990 trailer. I looked close and the bolt does appear to have a metal sleeve over the bolt shank, it's not beat up or anything so i'm just going to leave it alone, there hasn't been any kind of problem It just looked odd at the time but now that I'm understanding the concept it's all good, but a brass or bronze sleeve sounds appealing when the time comes, or even the nylon thanks for the advise.
