Does anyone know what the frequency is for changing the lower unit gear oil is in a 1975 6 HP Evinrude?

Does it go by hours or weeks or months?

Thanks

Really depends on use, if you are out runnig the motor 5-6 hours a day then alot more often than if you take it out every other saturday.

I normally change mine in the fall then at least once during the season more to keep an eye on water leaks than because it needs changed.

I also crack the bottom plug once in a while just to check for water, let a drop out, if it is water Iknow there is a problem, if it is nice honey colored oil I am good for a while.

This si the 3rd lower I have had on this engine so I am a litle gun shy(1 was a water leak 2 were prop strikes)

Oil is way cheaper than a lower so check/change it often and be sure to use "lower unit oil" it has addatives to deal with water intrusion.

when you break the seal on the bottom plug you should replace the seal washer. they are not reusable.
it is recommended to change the oil and plug seals before the first freeze each fall.

I agree with above.
Also, I just bought a cheap oil pump for $8 that screws into the fill hole. Makes the job much easier to do, and then you can buy oil by the quart/gal as needed.
