I have a 20 ft center console boat with a Nissan 120 outboard. I am having a problem with gas spitting back out of the gas vent which is located next to the fill hole. It is actually a part of the fill hole unit. The problem is worse when I first start filling up when the tank is 1/2 full or less. The problem seems to stop when the tank is close to full. Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: fuel spitting back

Is your boat sitting level when you are fueling up???
Sounds like fuel is in the vent line at the beginning of the fueling.
You may need to lower the tongue some.

Re: fuel spitting back

The vent line should slope from the vent to the tank so any fuel in it runs into the tank. Now if you have sags in the vent line then the line will collect fuel in the low spot. When you start filling the air in the tank should go out the vent line but if it has fuel in a low place then that fuel will be forced up and out the vent. So make sure the vent line slopes from the vent all the way to the tank. You may need to shorten the vent line or add some support to prevent low places that can fill with fuel. The vent hose should come out of the top of the tank and angle up to the vent and should never have fuel in it unless the tank is over filled.

One thing if you ever fill at a marina and fuel spills into the water it is a very large fine for the clean up. Even a few drops can cause a big fine. So if you know it is going to leak catch the fuel with a bucket to keep it out of the water.

look at manual. there may be a filter that needs replacing. Call local boat shop and ask.
