I saw an ad for a Four Winns 190 Horizon with a 350 chevy motor/volvo outdrive. I'm looking for a first boat and was kind of puzzled by the motor size on this boat. In trying to compare engine, boats are usually listed as 3.0, 4.3, 5.0 etc. How would this 350 compare in those numbers? I was really hoping for a 4.3 but I think that number is equivalent to less than 200hp, right? How would the gas consumption compare to a 4.3? The boat was around 2003 year model. Thanks.

fuel comparison, all depends on how hard you get into the carb. 4.3 in a 19 ft would be absolute minimum, in my book. i have a 99 5.7 w/ volvo SX drive, in a 23 ft deckboat, great running machine, and not horrible on fuel. rarely ever have to run more than 3/4 throttle.

Sounds Kind of overkill for a 19' open bow, aint it? I'm mainly want to use it for pleasure cruising and pulling the kids in tubes. I guess water skiing may always be an option in the future. How's the reliability on the motor? I don't own any american cars, so I wouldn't know.

the motor is as reliable as the maintenance it has received. when cared for they last 20-30 years. same with outdrive. with kids, you as they grow, you will be glad you have the extra power. also kids, like to bring friends, when you get a boat load, that 4.3 is going to have to work awfully hard to get all that up on plane, where the 5.7 hardly knows it has a load.

Sounds like a great package to me. I have an older 19' (heavy) open bow which I repowered with a used 1990 5.7L (350) engine. I'm guessing that one would have a bit more hp than the 1990 version. It's a tried and true engine for boats and I'd think it was a fairly expensive upgrade in that boat, which likely came with a 4.3L standard.

The fuel use is way overblown. IF you drive the 5.7L like a 4.3L it isn't a big dif. in fuel usage. The 5.7L has more go, so if you want to punch it now and then, more gas. Big deal. It's more fun. Never worry about too heavy a load for water sports, etc.
