1971 johnson 65hp clunks

whenever I put it into forward it takes a minute I can hear the solenoid clicking then it goes into to gear (First problem) then when getting onto a plain it clunks pops out of gear and right back in as if a tooth were broken or something and keeps on going and doesnt do it till i take it back out of gear... both of these problems started at the same time and just happened out of no where yesterday i dropped the foot and seen that the wire (electric shift) to the solenoid was fryed i replaced it but still no dice... any help??

first question, are you using the Premium blend Type C lower unit fluid for Electric shift motors. or are you using 80-90 wt lower unit lube.

Honestly I don't know I just bought the boat about three months ago and just recently in the past two fishing trips it started doing it. I go fishing every weekend so I've must have taken it out atleast a dozen or so times and all of a sudden it just started doing it..

As stated, the electric shifts REQUIRE type "C". Anything else WILL cause problems.

get the correct oil and change it, also the the seals for the drain and vent screw. Oil available at Lambs Yacht center, and Becks outboards.

Where did you find the correct shift wire for that engine?
