70's and 80's Johnson Javelins?

I've always wondered what was with the 85 hp Johnson engines of the 70's and 80's, because they said Javelin on the side. Were these engines set up differently or were they special in anyway? I've only seen 85 hp models, but I've heard of 100 hp models. Just wondering what the deal with that was. Pics would be great if you have them. Thanks!

Also, what's with the 70 hp Stinger? Was that just a marketing ploy or was there something special about these engines?

marketing all they, different cowl, maybe just minor differences.

They were just model names & styling mostly. However there were some real differences in some of the Stinger models.

Some of the 75 hp stinger (15" models) had different port timing and different heads. That was the legal motor / powerhead for a couple of race classes back then.

DHadley is correct the 75 shorty was a BAD dude!!! When we raced back in the early 80's, we cut the pistons,cut heads,ground/welded tuners, played with different carbs, ran gearcases 1/2 full, removed reverse gear, all for rpm and speed. The little devils would turn over 7000rpm and stay together!!! Had plenty of fun them days :D
