PVC Guide on's and freezing temps???

I know a few folks here have made "guide ons" using regular white PVC pipe. I am just about to bolt a set onto my trailer, and after having some white PVC snap in the freezing temps a few weeks ago, I'm thinking about switching to the grey exterior grace PVC. But before I spend the $$$ on the grey PVC, I thought I'd ask if anyone here has had problems with their white pvc guides breaking in the cold, either from use or when stored?

Ayuh,...

When it's Cold,... All plastics are brittle,...

My guides are the grey sch.80 electrical conduit stuff,...
I used the 90? sweeps on top keep the boat from hanging up...

Don't know about the white, but I snapped a piece of 2" gray electrical conduit that I had on my trailer when it was freezing. Worked fine in warm tamps, but couldn't stand the cold.

Mark i also drilled holes in the bottom of mine, so water would drain out. i know i could have put a cap on them.

Thanks for the replies. The boat will probably never get used in freezing temps, I'm just thinking about the kids playing in the snow around the boats. Just leaning on the white pvc in the cold could snap it. I just dropped a 3 ft length about 4 feet to the ground and it cracked with temps in the 20's or so.

After going to the trouble of making the brackets to bolt on the PVC, I think it would be smart to use the electric pvc just for the uv protection. Then it won't need painting. I hate painting stuff that shouldn't need it, that just results in future scraping and painting!!!

Bond-O, what are the 90 degree sweeps you refer to?

I used gray PVC electrical conduit for rod holders on my boat, it will discolor with exposure to sun light. Maybe not a severe as the white PVC, but still discolors.

Hate to answer for someone else, but I'm sure that he is referring to as a long radius 90. They are used instead of regular 90?s because you are normally pulling wire though conduit. It would be impossible to get a fish tape through a regular 90.

There is no difference between the white PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and the grey stuff CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) as far as the low temp side. They are both rated at 0 degrees for non-pressure applications. The difference is on the high side the PVC is rated at 150 degrees and the CPVC is at 210. The problem is that they both become more brittle as the temp drops. Just a side note, don?t every think about using either one in a pressurized air service. They both make very nice shrapnel bombs when they fail.

Hey klindww, thanks for passing that info along. Very useful.

I know from personal experience that white pvc left outdoors yellows and cracks from sun exposure. But the grey CPVC does not. It might fade a bit, but does not fail from sun exposure. I could use the PVC, I just hate to paint stuff. And the grey will match the galvanized trailer better!
