Can I train my cat to use outside litter box?

Id like the litter box on the balcony, Cody is 6 mos, smart and has NEVER had an accident since we got him at 6 weeks. Would I be able to "train" him to go out in the a.m. before I leave for work, then have him inside all day, and when I get home let him out again???? Worked with my dog......

Probably not. Cats are different animals and have different behaviors. One of those behaviors is for them to find a place to go, if the litter box is either not available or not clean. Once they go somewhere in your house, they will tend to return to that area. As far as they are concerned, that place has become the new bathroom, and until you get rid of the odor, they will continue to use it.

Possibly. Can you be patient and work the litter box towards the balcony over a period of a week or two? The cat will follow it if the move is not too drastic say 4-5 feet at a pop.

The only concern is cats enjoy privacy and tend to be a bit nocturnal..... I have 3 cats and 2 dogs who have a schedule. We all "go to bed" at the same time and "wake up" at the same time but the cats play during the night too....... I know they use their facilities sometime during the night... I can tell because they sometimes leave a magazine next to the box

i have a dog door, the cats use it as well. Litter box on screen porch.

Sounds like it would be better to train them to use the toilet instead. At least you could get rid of the litter box all together. Cats are like women,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they like the seat left down

We did a thread a few years ago in Non-boating Tech about toilet training my cat. I bought the kit and she was using the toilet in 48 hours. My work was reduced to flushing once in a while.

well we did move litter box(has a cover on it) a few times to different rooms, no problem. It's right by the balcony sliding glass door - a doggy door came to mind as well. He's totally an indoor cat except everyday when I get home, he runs out just for a few minutes and loves to explore on the balcony as well - then comes back in. We clean box out every other day, and box has the freshstep litter and a charcoal filter, but Id still rather have it outside...I'll have to experiment...

My cat accidently got left in the laundry room overnight. When I let her in the house,she ran straight to the litter box. No mess-but- Ask a vet what kind of health problems this would cause for the animal. I think it's a bad idea.

If you can allow the cat to get to the litter box any time he wants, then you have a different situation. Moving the box isn't a big deal either, as long as you show the cat where it is.
