Smokers beware on this. A new requirement for the manufactures is to put this additive in your cigarettes. Some that have smoked these have became ill.

This additive is to put into the cigarette to put it out if it is left unattended. I can understand why as for the hazard of starting a structural fire. I just think it should have been checked out further for the possible health hazards.

I don't understand with all the publicity on all the different chemicals that are found in cigarettes, why do they add more? Reminds me of the days years ago when paraquat was sprayed on marijuana. They had to stop that because they found out it was poisoning lots of dope smokers. For those who haven't stopped smoking, take a look at your smokes and see if the stuff is in them. What I understand, it is more likely to be in the cheaper brands at this time.

My wife is a smoker and she changed brands. Now she is feeling much better since she did. She had got word about this stuff from the smoke shop she buys from. For some reason the media hasn't picked this up yet. Probably because they want all the smokers to quit or die,,,,,,,,,,,,,at least it seems that way.

why not just take out the chemicals that make it stay lit. cigars go out, because they don't have all the crap in them. even the little swisher sweets, cigarette size, i smoke.

Not all states have this. I live in MD and they have them. WV does not (yet).
Anything Maryland does (which is usually first before any other state when it comes to inane b.s.) sends up a red flag with me.
While I can understand the arguement for this, I also think it's one of the stupidest things lawmakers are wasting our taxes on.
You just know there is going to some idiot that falls asleep with one of these, burns his house down, and sues Philip Morris.
Another step in reducing personal responsibility.
Whether you are for or against tobacco, without it, we would all be speaking French or Spanish.

The highlighted portion is your own answer to your question. Rest assured that if there was anty truth to this it would be a front page fixture.
Fire-safe cigarettes are manufactured by increasing the thickness of the paper in various spots along the length. These effectively act as "speed-bumps" and will extinguish an unattended cigarette.
I suppose the more retentive types could argue that a little extra paper IS added....and that since paper contains chemicals that therefore.....

This use of added chemicals in cigarettes for fire-stopping is just another urban legend that gets propogated by people's willingness to believe any story because of its senationalism, especially if it puts big companiies or politicians in a bad light ~ and their unwillingness to do even a basic check on the rumour that was presented to them as fact.

And cigars go out because of the difference in size and construction....not added chemicals.

Since I have too much experience with both cigars & cigs..

Cigars will go out due to how tightly they are rolled, it takes a much larger "draw" of air pulling through the cigar to keep it lit.

Cigarettes are much looser, with gaps in the tobacco to allow air to easily pass through and burns fairly constantly once lit.

If it is just a variance in thickness of the paper, I see no big deal about it. Maybe it is just a coincidence that people getting sick.

A local family that advocated against tobacco use just lost their 17 year old son to lung cancer. Draw your own conclusion of what caused it.

Lots of stuff is kept from the public eye. I tend to watch the History channel since I was stupid in high school to pay attention. After watching and learning of all the possible thousands of nuclear bomb testing throughout the world, just how much fall out is there in the air we breath?

I am a former smoker but not a reformed smoker. People should be permitted to do what they want to.

I will admit that as a former smoker I used to be sick more when I smoked and I do believe that feeling like garbage can be attributed to smoking. Possibly the change in the paper and change in the way you must smoke the self extinguishing cigarettes could have an adverse effect on your wife.

As far as fallout from a nuclear weapons test ....... the key word is fallout and it does just that.... it falls. Whatever radiation was carried away by the winds has fallen in rain/snow over that past years. The half life of radiation has been working on the stored potential for illness too. We are in more danger from the sun's radiation and radon gas then we are from the past nuclear testing.

Im not a smoker but work in the bar business and we have several customers who drive truck, while driving they will purchase smokes from other states if they are cheaper then here at home. I know its not only in just cheap smokes. Marlboros bought in KY/TN area have that inside that if your not inhaling on the cigg it will go out. Good concept behind it, but not sure what harm the chemical does, but if your smoking that really isnt that much of a concern to begin with I guess.

How ironic.

Cigarette companies have put chemicals into smokes, for years, that made them burn FASTER.

I am so grateful to have given up, such a stupid, harmful habit, 22 years now.

Of course, I still have plenty of other bad habits, that need some work also. ;)

The same with a mattress. In 2007 our goverment decided that a fire barrier must be placed between mattress and material. Supposedly a cigarette can't burn through it. All well and good except that they are finding out that the fr can give off toxins as foam does when its exposed to flame. Plus all bedding will burn if it gets hot enough. Its only a thin sheet of fr but it raised the cost of goods up 25%. I better stop here cause all my mattresses had to be burned tested(Gov) at a cost of 1,000.00 a set plus my cost of the destroyed bedding.
Anything that has fr in it there are chemicals involved. Cancer must not be killn off enough so they came up with that idea to hurry the process along.

Another reason not to smoke.

Ive got a question for any doctors in the house. I use to smoke about 20 years ago and happy i quit. But since i quit i put on weight. Obviously i ate to fill the void of smoking. I know this happens to a lot of people.

My question is whats healthier smoking moderately or being over weight?

Just one of those questions Ive pondered for a long time.

Ironic I was just complaining about these cheap ciggs I got the other day (Montego's) I noticed if I let the lit cig sit in the ash tray too long without puffing on it the darn thing goes out.
As kids our gang used to take lit cigs, pull the butt off and shove an M-80 fuse up into it m-80 still attached, it would give us about 10 mins to get back to the house and listen for the cops to respond. When we did this it was usually about 6 of us guys and a dozen m-80's, we'd spread out and set the charges with the time delay ciggs. always under dumpsters, bridges, or where nobody innocent could get hurt you know we were'nt doing it to hurt anyone, just fun to sit back and laugh as the boom's went off one by one.

Re: Fire Safe Cigarettes

they passed a law here in MN a few months back . They can only sell the fire safe ciggs now. Im not a big fan. they dont taste the same, they dont smoke the same. you have to pull very hard on it to get anything out of it. because of them I am down to 3 smokes a day.

BTW, the statistic was 12 people die in smoking related fires each year in MN. Im also all for saving lives, But I think they need a little more work since Im only slightly impressed.
