Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Not bad for the 1st run.........

31MPH @ 2400RPM................is that right?

You are right that was a typo on my part. I was running right at 21 mph. It is a 17p or a 15p I'll have to check, I have one of each and don't remember which one is on there right now.

Your shift interrupt is not working....your manual should give you the troubleshooting tips.....as far as you idle....did you ever fine tune that rebuilt carb??? GREAT POST good job

Yep, I went out today and the shift cables weren't adjusted correctly and the interrupter wasn't cutting off the engine as it should. I pulled out the manual and after a few attempts I think that I finally got it right. I took that valve cover off and tried to re-adjust the rocker arms but I still hear that lifter noise. Since I really am not an "engine guy" I am just going to let a mechanic look at it.....I hope to pull the boat to Alabama soon and while it is there my brother in law can see what he can do to stop the noise. That temperature sender definitely isn't working, I have ordered an OEM one and I hope to have it soon. I will be out of town all next week until Friday so it should be here when I get back. Otherwise I think this thread can be closed. I will open up a new one if I have any additional issues with the break in. If I am lucky I can get out tomorrow morning early on the boat and back home before I have to leave for out of town.

Re loud lifter.. That's not a good sign. What ever you do don't over rev it without a load until you find the problem. You can drop the keepers on a valve spring and the valve will drop out and go right through the top of a piston. That's the voice of experience speaking.

The adjustement technique is:
Get a set of splash covers for the rocker arms, clip the splash covers onto the ends of the rocker arms and then start the engine at an idle. Do the intake valves first by tightening them down until the engine begins to run slightly rough then back them off 1/4 turn. On the exhaust, just take them down until they stop clacking. If you have one that won't stop clacking or won't adjust (intake) you either have a bad lifter or a flat cam lob. I'm hoping it's just a matter of adjusting but cams most commonly go flat during break-in and a lifter can fail anytime but it's usually right out of the box.

Oh yeah, if you end up having to pull the top end off to check that lifter, be careful, the edges on the seat of the bad lifter will be razor sharp.

i have been following your thread, very nicely done, about that knocking noise check your fuel pump, i notice you has install the old one from the broken engine. when i got my engine from rapido it turn up i was getting that same tapping sound, i re adjust the valve many time, but the knocking would not go away. i perchase a stechscope and found the noise was coming from the fuel pump, i install a new one and the noise was gone. good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm still out of town but I should be back in Florida tonight. I'm actually pulling the boat 170 miles to Alabama's Lake Eufaula tomorrow but beforehand I will pull out the old stethoscope and check and see exactly where the noise is coming from. I had been thinking of that but just assumed right off the top that it was the lifters. If it is coming from the fuel pump then I will leave it alone since the pump is working. I'll report back my findings.

well I must disagree on the plug wire bit ,crosseng # 5 and # 7 wires over or under each other is just asking for trouble, keep them separated with wire spreaders. I had a stock car engine detonate so bad it cracked #5 cylnder wall, the cause? #5 and #7 wires crossed over each other. any high performance book will tell you this
.. O.K. you have the right to disagree if you wish... However since I do care about the rest of the readers here, I must tell you that you are missinterpreting the reading material you have.

The firing order on a small block chevy is 18436572. Induction occurs when two conductors are placed parralel to each other. Induction that is occuring between two parrallel conductors is disrupted when the paths of those two parallel conductors are crossed, (Electon theory 101).

I went out and installed new temp sender yesterday and tested it today and it is working perfectly. I looked in the garage for my stethoscope and like everything else in the garage it has gone on vacation and left me. I will search for it again when I return tomorrow from Lake Eufaula.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Well I made it to the lake but it wasn't an easy trip. The fuel pump died on the truck so I had to be towed the final 55 miles. My nephew met me and we hitched the boat up to his truck and pulled it the rest of the way. It was late when we finally got here so tomorrow I will have the fuel pump fixed and we will take the boat out on the lake and do some fishing and cruising.

if its not one thing its another

You just don't know the half of it. I wasn't able to get the fuel pump fixed until this evening after driving to another city and state 50 miles away. So we never actually got a chance to put the boat in the water at all. I left it in AL at my sisters so in a couple of weeks I will go back and spend a weekend there and hopefully if all goes well I can get it in the water then and test everything out.

I'm not one to be second guessing fate, something didn't want you on the water. Listen to the god's they were trying to tell you something. O.K. that's probably just a bunch of baloney but at least double check the plug.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Just and UPDATE.........I finally got back out today with the boat for about an hours worth of enjoyment. Here is the video link that I was able to take.

Boat Test Drive

The boat ran strong and had very good speed for a heavy boat with 6 people on board. With 2 adults and 4 children of varying sizes it ran at 33 mph at 3800 rpm's. I only ran it that high for brief spurts opting to run at about 2500 rpm's the majority of the time. Once I found that sweet spot in the trim setting she cruised out very nice. Easily getting on plane and I had no problems out of her at all. Temp stayed right at 150 at all times. Oil pressure was at about 48. All in all I really had fun. Wish I could've stayed out longer. I had my wife with me and she's a land lubber. Just wanted to get back to the dock as soon as possible. We rode around and went maybe 6 miles total before calling it a day.

In the end however I still wasn't able to bring the boat home. A car cut me off and when I hit the brakes it caused the trailers surge brakes to lock and one of the wheels is now locked and it was dark when I got ready to leave and I didn't feel like trying to unlock it. I left it at my sisters house again. Maybe next week I will go and fix the wheel/brakes and tow it back to Florida.

Sorry about the video and no sound but it's the best I could do on short notice.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Great Thread.

I am just beginning to gather the parts needed to build out my new 454. Long block arrived over the winter, and been cleaning up the old parts. You have to appreciate the tips..

I may have to start my own thread, it is a great way to learn and teach!

I cannot say I will be finished as fast as you... since it is snowing today, I don't plan to be water bound until end of next month!

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Well I am glad it motivated you to make it. I actually found the plans from another member here on iboats and made mine from it.

Yes I was able to get the oil leak contained and the ticking sound worked itself out it seems. It is gone now. I really had a lot of fun yesterday. Just won't take the old lady next time that's all, then I can stay out as long as I want.
