Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

I have another question when you find the time, am I able to run the engine while the drive is in the upward position ( Raised out of water )? From what I have heard it was stated that it could be ran but only at an idle speed. I have not done this and do not run and trim, sort to speak. Again I have also heard it is not safe to do that while drive is in upward position. I just wanted to know what the proper procedure is? It does not seem to me that the older drives were ment to function like this, that is why I have avoided it to date.

NO !!!!!

Partially up and low rpm a little bit. All the way up will cost you BIG BUCKS it the parts that will probably be destroyed.

Re: VolvoPenta 280..Pls Help!

Thank you again I also ordered some new parts as-well as picked up my alternator, had it rebuilt and marined. I purchased new side mount control w/ tilt and trim on the handle, I also bought a new BTO sports steering wheel, and all new guages. The guages and controls were both Teleflex. But that almost completes the cockpit. Also Thank you once again for all your help, I am certain I will have engine questions again soon.

Here are some updated pictures with the 280 outdrive, took these this morning. Found out some real bad news though, what i initially thought was going to be some minor fiberglass work, well in short a nightmare, all stringers and wood under the floor was rotted. So that is bummer I have a few estimates on the job planned for tomorrow. In the meanwhile these pictures will keep you occupied until I conquer yet another hurdle. That is how my boat likes it, difficult and expensive, trust me she wont have it any other way, Iv'e tried to reason with her, but to no avail.

Did you see the 280? Letting the pros redo the entire hull, he only quoted me $1200, so I'm over the knock in the wallet, and just looking forward to what it is going to look like when it is completed. He said it will look new and should last twenty years, so I will keep you updated. Well it will be fully restored after that only things not replaced are the windshield and the rod holders. :)

My VP 280 is AQ???,

The AQ stands for "Aquamatic" which is what Volvo called sterndrives. So AQ means it's a sterndrive engine, just because I know that a 190 model was a Ford 302 and you have a sterndrive, therefore you have an AQ190-280
The last number indicates the type drive.
An AQ200 was a 305 Chevy engine.

Right on. Sweet that way I can order the seal kit if it is needed and save a few bucks on the parts, only like thirty doallrs, but hey $30.00 can buy many other little things I could also use.
