How safe is marina gas?

This might be a really dumb question, but I have always heard you should not use gas over a few months old unless you put stabilizer in it, or it can gum things up. The marinas around here basically shut down for at least 6 months over the winter, and I am sure their gas just sits in the tanks without any stabilizer. The last few summers haven't seen a whole lot of activity because of high gas prices, so some of that gas may even be older. So what do y'all think?

The key factor in using old gas is that it has to have the treatment added before it is stored, not after several months of storage. By then it has already started to go sour. There are no additives that bring fuel back to life (so to speak). There is nothing wrong with buying fuel at a marina that sell lots of fuel so turnover is good. A marina off well traveled waters may have moisture and other issues.

Re: How safe is marina gas?

Thats a problem i never had to think about yet.

I trailer my boat and fill it on the way home every time.

This avoids a few problems in my mind.

1- Condensation, i know some believe it doesn't matter if the tank is full or empty it's a non-issue, not to me i'm old school, and i ain't changing my mind. It's what i was taught in the Air Force.

2- A full tank is less dangerous then a half empty tank, and water can't get in if there is nowhere for it to go.

3- No issue with the gas getting old in the stations i use they are the cheapest and there is usually a line cause it's cheaper then the other guys.

4- I use Hess , Valero, Mobil, Bp. But mostly Hess did a study years ago and i found it's one of the cleanest gas around. Again i could be wrong, but my money, my boat, my choice to believe what old wives tale i choose to believe. And i believe my boat and autos run better with the above gas.

5- Last but not least PRICE i ain't payin one penny more then i got to. And thats a steep price to pay for marina gas like a dollar to 2.50 more per gallon, latter for that.

Your question would depend entirely on the marina in question. However, they do get inspected by your local weights and measure people for quality, etc, just like gas stations for cars.

I have never personally had any issues with marina gasoline, but i do have to say that I tend to try and avoid using it for one reason, and one reason only. If you fill it up at gas stations on the way to or from home, it is usually 30 to 50 cents a gallon cheaper than at the marinas.
