Hey guys,

I just bought a Mariah Z220 boat and I need some help from you guys.
I took my boat to a Professional Fiberglass person to get the oxidation out of my boat.
The boat had the stickers and emblems taking off at my request because I liked the look of a clean white 22 foot boat. This Fiberglass guy calls me today and states that underneath the decals he will not be able to get it all to look the same. He said that it will be darker where the decals are and that maybe in a summer it will bleach it all to look the same. Im paying this guy $700 dollars to wet sand the boat and fix some scratches on the hull of the boat. He told me at first that he could get the whole boat to look brand new white after sanding and polishing. He also did say that he didn?t want to sand through the gel-coat and that is the reason why he cant sand any further to get the boat to look all white under the decals. Do you think he is full of it or maybe just realized it was a bigger job than what he quoted me at first? The boat is to big he said to even get into his shop.. Im figuring he might no just want to put in the extra effort to sand top to bottom on the boat.

Thanks.. Any comments would help me.

that is a very common problem, the decal protected the hull for UV rays.

Yeah, my boat has the same problem but the fish don't care so I don't either lol. All you can do is hope that it will bleach out and blend in, how old is the boat?

It took a few years for the gel coat to fade in the sun, it will take a few years for the dark areas to catch up. I don't think the proprietor is short changing you, its just what happens when decals are removed.

So there is no fix?

Nope!!! Nothing short of sanding out and re-gel coating. That will cost you way more than $700 He probably has $300-$350 in material into your boat doing what he is doing now.

Surely if we can send a man to the Moon we can bleach the Gel-Coat to blend in. lol
This is a dumb question but wonder if I could spray bleach on the hull in the sun would it bleach it white?
Kidding.

You have your own business right?
Do you think after I wax the boat really good will that help to make it blend better?

First yes I have my own buisness and second no. Waxing will not improve the shadow.
Nothing I know of short of light sanding will take it out. This can destroy or damage the Gel Coat if your not very careful. Understand the shadow is the original color of the hull and it was protected from the suns UV rays by the decal. You can never bring the boat color that has faded completely back to the new condition the fiberglass was in when it left the factory. 3M Color Restore applied exactly as written on the bottle will help a little but not much and you have to blend it in or have a break point. I wonder are you just talking about where the Reg Numbers and tag were or did you remove the boats name?

Stickers and All are remove!

Thanks for explaining it to me.. I'm going to the boat shop today to to take a gander at it.

I'm kicking myself now for taking the stickers/decals off. But they look like crap!

The Fiberglass guy is sanding and polishing the boat. Should I just finish the job by waxing the boat to seal it from the harmful elements? Or do you think try the color restoring and then wax?

Ask the Guy at the shop. But I don't think the color restore will be necessary if he is sanding and polishing. But definalty put another coat of wax on it before putting it into the water. Wait a few days after you get the boat back though. Then Wax, Wax, Wax and keep it waxed at least three times a season. Depending where you are. The more you wax it the easier it will be to do but if you neglect it. You will be paying again. Do not use bleach !!!!
