i diagnosed the problem (with yall's help) on my 1979 200 Evinrude it has a bad power pack i rebuilt the fuel pumps while it is down and i was spinning the motor over to make sure the pumps were ok and the motor backfired  is this normal with a bad power pack ?? i just figured it would spin and not crank...I only did this once....thanks the pack has been ordered

Re: 200 evinrude

We're assuming it backfired thru the exhaust. A couple of things can cause that. The most common is a crossed wire. Anywhere form the pack or timer base to the coils to the plugs.

Another thing is that if it wasn't firing when you were turning it over and then it did fire, it can ignite the unburned fuel in the exhaust passage.

And of course our old favorite, the sheared flywheel key.

Yes it was thru the exhaust, i'm thinking it was the bad pack trying to intermittenly fire... if the flywheel key was sheared how would you tell from looking or do you have to just take it apart ?? thanks for all the help

Take the plugs out and using a screwdriver or pencil on #1 piston, bring it up to top dead center. The #1 on the flywheel should be right at the timing pointer (assuming the pointer was set correctly before). Not deadly accurate but it'll be real close. If it's off then it's time to pop the flywheel.

Re: 200 evinrude

Well Dhadley you was right the crankshaft key was sheared (got a good one off of my parts motor) but i still only got spark from one side...i have a parts motor (1979 150 Johnson) so i robbed all the electronics from it except the timer base and now i have good spark on all cylinders but it still will not crank...

While spinning it over i put a timming light on number one wire and it flashes at 4 degrees BTDC...i also checked the carbs they have fuel in the bowls (i pulled the plug on the side of the bowl and there was fuel in there) i just went through the carbs the other day they were clean...i pulled the spark plugs and they looked dry though

i even sprayed a shot of starting fluid down the carbs and nothing not even a sputter i know this isnt the best thing but i was at least wanting it to sputter or somthing but i got nothing...does anybody have an idea what could be wrong...i even bought fresh gas and mixed it today...

In mechanics lingo, crank means spinning it over. Its the same thing.
Fire is when it starts to run.

Yours is cranking over but failing to fire.
Dry plugs...
I'd rebuild the carbs with proper kits and check the choke solenoid but....
Interesting problem, Dhadley is the best here so I'll let him solve it.
