Yamha 2004 4 stroke no start...electrical?

Guys, motor ran great with no issues till I started a winter project to add a new console with new gauges (tach, voltage. etc). Have successfully installed tach and battery indicator gauge. Went to turn over the engine to see that all was well and suddenly nothing. Trim/tilt works fine, when I turn the key, the tach lights up as well at the battery indicator (which does indicate a good charge.. I have a charger hooked up). I checked the main fuse in back, that is good. I did go into the 704 control box to see if the trim/tilt signal wire was hiding in there. I had it disassembled bit couldn't find the wire. I'm pretty sure I put everything back together correctly as forward-reverse-and neutral seem to be engaging. It is in neutral when I try to get it to turn over. Any ideas? Any other fuse locations to check?

Thanks

There is some electrical troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs Forum, cbart. Check that out. It probably won't point exactly to the fault, but it will get you in the right system.

Good luck, and welcome to iboats. :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out...I'm thinking it has something to do with the control box I was tinkering with. Maybe knocked a wire off of the neutral switch... It's acting like in thinks it's in gear so it won't respond...Or maybe the kill switch got knocked off kilter...

kill switch doesnt have dink to do with the start switch.
kill switch simply shorts the ign and prevents powering up the ign and fuel circuits(if EFI).
as you only say its a F motor thats all I can say there.
now, you did indicate its a 704 control.
check for continuity between the brown wires at the 704 harness end of the connector should be 0 ohms in N and infinity in either gear position.
DO NOT shift into Reverse without either turning the prop or turning the driveshaft
actually I dont shift into either in gear position unless one of the shafts is turning.
trim and tilt signal wire is pink and in the trim/oil alarm harness.
trim/tilt actuate is the red, green, and blue wires from the switch in the handle to the harness connector.

Rodbolt,
It's a 60 hp tlr....

Thanks for the heads up...
Ok, too late for the shifting into reverse part, already did that. Am I looking at a bad neutral switch possibly?

Guys, upon further review, it's a 703 control...Not sure if that changes things.

check out this post. has some pics of the neutral safety switch in the 704 binnacle.

I did see this post previously in my searching...turns out I have a 703 control. I have taken the control apart and have identified the switch...it has the 2 brown wires soldered into it. Would unhooking these two wires and attaching them together temporarily bypass the neutral switch and allow me to troubleshoot?

Guys,
Did the brown wire bypass this morning...Success! Will be ordering a new neutral switch tomorrow. Now if anyone can tell me which wire color coming out of my 703 control is the trim level indicator, that would make my day. The 3 colors coming out are red, light purple/red stripe, and light green.

Thanks again for the guidance!

An update...Installed the new neutral switch...nothing. Same symptoms as before. When I bypass it, it'll fire. Any suggestions as where to troubleshoot next?

Thanks,
Chris
