Here is another outboard to add to my collection:

Its a johnson 2cyl....

And thats about all I know.

Here is the tag:

So, It has a square white plug coming out of it, and 2 battery cables.
With it, came the controls. A metal box with 2 more battery cables, and the other end to the mysterious plug.

So what is this? I was thinking it was going to have the usual red round plug and I could just plug my controller in and be done with it.

Im guessing it just houses the starter cyl , but there is no key, could it have gone here?:

Yes, that box usually has the connections and the starter solenoid. The long wire coming out of it should have the key switch at the end. So what was cut was probably it.

before putting any $ into it, check the compression. also is it legal in Calif, now? when you get ready to wire it, i have some home diagrams.

Don't replace that starter solenoid with a car solenoid. That will destroy the safety switch, allow starting at wide open throttle, and mess up the operation of the vacuum cut-out switch. They have the correct solenoid here at iboats. Yes, they LOOK the same, but are different inside.

4ish gallons or so at WOT per hour....thats about what my 57 35HP uses.

That's about right. The 10% rule says 3.3 gallons per hour at WOT.

Yeah, compression will be first. But why do you say that? was this engine never any good? Not worth anything? old / slow?

Also, I hear everyone saying "4-stroke California legal!" whenever they are trying to sell there outboard/boat.

I have yet to find a lake around here that doesn't allow 2-strokes

you always check compression first, to see if you have a viable base to work with. these old motors you buy without starting, you never know what could be wrong, it is the first step to trouble shooting to get it running again.

that was and can be a great reliable motor.

i suggest you you check into California emissions and polutant laws, on 2 stroke motors, in certain areas they have even outlawed 2 stroked weedeaters, and blowers, this is one of the reason for more 4 strokes, and the Etec being developed.

Theres a couple lakes in So Cal that wont allow 2 strokes...Lake Skinner is the only one i can think of off the top of my head but i believe there is at least one more.

Others could care less...but im sure they will eventually put a 2 stroke ban in place on all California waters.

I just bought a 65 33hp off eBay. It looks exactly like yours. Mine comes with all the controls, cables, key box etc etc etc. It's being delilvered this time next week. I may have to compare notes with you.

Good luck with yours. :)

"Absotively!" An automotive solenoid is grounded through the base, while an outboard solenoid is not. One of the two, smaller posts on the OMC solenoid will be the correct one for the ground circuit.

Automotive solenoids are also not made to withstand a marine environment. I've actually used them in a couple of applications because I understood how to wire them, but they don't last long.

Jay, are you in a salt water area as up here where we're 500 miles from the nearest salt water and auto solenoids work fine and last just as long... And the base being grounded makes little diff as long as you wire it up correctly...
