Hey guys,i have a 1985 force 125 i was wondering if i could run it with the thermostat out ,i live on the chasapeake bay in 70 to 80 degree water,would this be a problem ,i talked to a couple people about it and they said it will be fine,i was just getting some more advise,thank you

you can run it without thermostat temporary, install a new thermo to keep engine at a specific temperature . i believe its a 110 temp. thermo

You can generally run without a thermostat without harm to the motor. However, running without one can sometimes lead to cold "scorching" of the cylinder walls due to insufficient lubrication as well as sticky piston rings gummed up from excess carbon buildup if deposits are left unchecked. Better to run with then without.

If motor could run without thermostat, manufacturers wouldn't install one: it is important for fuel economy and engine performance.
I am checking mine now.

Ok, I replaced the thermostat the end of last season ,how often should i replace it. I put a 110 degree thermostat in it

Do you trailer the boat or leave it in the water? If you trailer it and flush every time it comes out, you can forget about it and just check the temp of the water coming out of the leg periodically. When run in fresh water or flushed after salt water use, they usually last forever.

If you leave it in the water for the season, I would check it, along with your water pump, yearly.

If you add a tell tale, you can feel the water coming from it instead of reaching around the leg, which also has hot exhaust gas coming out.

I trailer the boat and i flush it out everytime i come in,i had the last thermostat fail on me {it stuck closed} and the motor overheated and ended up costing me alot of money to fix so thats why i was wondering how often to change it. I also added a tempeture gauge to the motor and i put the sending unit in the water jacket of the head , i put a new impeller in it last year and i plan to put one in this year,also another question ,how can you tell if your water pump housing is bad ,for future reference because mine is aluminum,thanks guys for all your help.

If the inside of your water pump housing is badly pitted, then you need to change it. If it has small pits, I dress them out with some 400 emory cloth.

I haven't seen a thermostat fail in a coons age, especially when the boat is flushed every time. Now that you have a temp gage, you don't have too much to worry about.
