i never did this ? can i replace the coils without removing the base they are mounted on ? mounting screws are removed just the base of coil still holds in place thanks for any help

It's probably the spark plug wires holding it in place

yes they were are the original wires i was going to just do the coils but the wires are cracked pretty bad at the coil end under the boot so i ordered new wires .the new wires are just pressed into the coil connection or is there something else i should do when i replace ? thanks again to all this forum is the best

Yep,
The new wires are just pressed onto the pin that is in the recess in the coil.
Good luck----I'm sure enjoying my FD-11 lately!:)

If you use the Sierra coils you will find the pins are spiral or grooved. You may find it easier to twist them on. I trim back about a 1/8 - 1/4" of the wire insolation and flare out the wire at the coil end of the wire before I attach it. Do the same at the other end when you attach the spring.

If you're gonna replace the wires, you need to remove the plate that holds coils, etc. Not hard to do. Just take your time and do one side (coil/points/wire, etc.) at a time so you have the other one untouched as a visual reference.
