How many of you remove the previous boat names, buying used of course? If so, how would you do it if the name was painted on?

Re: removing previous boat names

My last Boston Whaler was a Striper 15 and had a long name in 12' high letters painted on each side.

I carefully and successfully removed it with #120 wet paper on a rubber block, but then was left with a big bright spot in the gel in the middle of aged gelcoat. I finally wet sanded the whole boat with #400 wet paper, then polished it. Came out like new.

If you do that, be really careful not to sand through the gelcoat. Some makers put it on pretty thin.

2nd vote on the oven cleaner. I was skeptical at first but two coats and a large, very odd/stupid boat painted boat name was gone.
A liitle warning, depending on the time that the name was on the boat, a "ghost" of the letters will be visible once the lettering is gone in the fiberglass. Where the paint protected the fiberglass in relationship to the rest of the boat will not match. I got rid of it by fine wet sanding and buffing it out to even evertything. Completely gone now Ike

I'd wait until you have bought the boat, though. I'm just sayin....

I realize this is an old post but what if she has no name? and is a high-time vessel? This is in response the rename link above. Is there any bad mojo for running around nameless and would there be a procedure for giving a 20 yr old vessel her first name?
