Unfortunately on the 5.5's you have to remove the powerhead to unhook the shifter linkage. It is not that hard though but you will need a new base gasket when you do it. Once it is unhooked you remove the 4 bolts holding the LU on and it will pull right off.

Go to vintageoutboard.com and they sell the kit (18-3001D) to change the impeller for $31.90. Includes all gaskets etc.

If you are not comfortable doing it, get a manual as it will have the step by step and pictures.

Look on the side of the midsection for an oval cover about 2 inches long with 2 screws holding it on. If it has the cover, you don't have to pull the powerhead because there's a shift rod connector in there. If not, you have to pull the powerhead.
I'm almost positive that Steve is right and you have to pull the pwrhead, though. Don't sweat it, it ain't that hard.:)
Don't lose your impeller driveshaft pin.....

ALL 5.5 and 7.5hp motors from the 1950s and early 1960s era have the same shift rod disconnect under the powerhead!!!

And they all have a carbon seal on the top end of the drive shaft. That seal MUST NOT be ignored. It must be in good condition and assembled correctly. You should also replace the 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring. If you ignore this, it WILL destroy the powerhead. It won't happen overnite, but it will happen. It is the seal that keeps water from getting into the crankcase.

F R is right - all of the 5.5 hp motors require powerhead removal and there is no side plate on them. In fact, even the later 6 hp motors, which do not requite powerhead removal, don't have the side plate. On those engines, the gearbox is separated from the exhaust housing, just enough to get a screwdriver or a 1/4 drive socket inside of the assembly, to the shift rod link bolts.

Jon,
Just a friendly word of advice..never run your motor out of water. Water cools the motor. It takes only a few seconds of running without water to destroy the new water pump you're going to install. Make sure the lower unit is deep enough into your test water barrel or on the boat to test.

OK So your all is telling me I need to pull the power head or (engine) then release the rod link. Then I should be able to get too the water pump that way. Would gasket maker work on them? Putting them back together because I dint want to wait three weeks to get gaskets in! Any other advice on this project would be very appreciated. THanks for your alls help

Don't take shortcuts. Get the proper gaskets. If you don't do it right, you'll just have to do it again, at best, or you can ruin your engine, at worst. Now that might mess up your boating plans for a while, right?

Jon,
I couldn't stand waiting 3 weeks, either.:) Sometimes I make my own gaskets out of felpro gasket material from the auto parts store. Gasket maker will not work. However, I'd just buy the powerhead base gasket, lower crankshaft carbon seal and o-ring, & water pump impeller from laingsoutboards.com and he will have it to you usually in 3 days. I figure that would run you about 40 bucks with shipping. I'd just call him up and make sure that he has them in stock (I'm almost sure he will) so you're not put on the "back order" list.
If you can't wait 3 days-----you're too darned impatient and are doomed to booger up your motor.;):p
BTW, why not just get a length of pull cord, 2 j4c champion plugs while you're at it. You don't want to be plagued by a broken pull cord when the fish are biting! Make sure he gives you the cord for a 5.5 (it's smaller than the 10hp cord, which won't fit)
Also, 5.5 hp evinrudes aren't very reliable and you should probably just buy a modern motor.

They usually only last 2 or 3 lifetimes.
Later,
JBJ
