Painting pylwood floor

I am going to tear up my old carpet, and paint my floor, A section of the floor will be new plywood, and the rest will be fiberglass.

I will probally use an epoxy paint, or other water proof paint, and put sand in it when wet, for grip.

My question is, what color should i use. I am thinking white, so it will not get hot when the sun hits it on 100 degree days.
But will the be too bright?

Maybe light blue would be better? but hold more heat.

And idk if i should spend the extra money for epoxy paint either.

skipping the advice that if you are replacing part of the deck(floor) then you more then likely have bigger issues then you think.... dont forget that the new ply should also be covered in fiberglass and the seems between new and old should be filled and covered with glass before you worry about paint.

why is it so nessecary to glass the floor?
You are not too worried about keeping water out, because it will just go down, and flow back to the bilge. Glass may keep the wood from rotting a little, But the paint would do the same.

Think interlux sells a grit additive as well.

I believe there's also a thread of someone using play sand to their paint job.

Alot of options with floors. Carpet is definitely the least attractive to me.

Personally I decided to deco dot vinyl, 20 bucks a yard and a can of 3m, with some light prep work.

In either case we went white, pretty much our full interior is, cos it gets hawt in July/August. Wouldn't worry about brightness too much unless you are totally opposed to sunglasses.

So you basically laid the same flexible tile you lay in a kitchen?

Is that non slip enough?

Glass will provide a lot more protection from water intrusion then paint. Wet wood = rot wood which is why you are replacing the section anyways..

glassing the plywood also adds to its rigidity. 1/2 inch glassed ply will feel like an inch of ply under foot.

but its your boat so you can do as you wish..

Bowman, The plywood is sealed with cloth and resin to make it waterproof. Even with this protection, plywood decks can rot since the water can get past the fibergalss via holes or cracks. under the deck are the structural components of the boat, like the stringers and frames. If these rot, the boat loses structural strength and can crack and sink.


As for your issue, you need to inspect the stringers and frames to see if they are sound. If so, install the new plywood, and screw it to the stringers and frames with SS screws. Now fill the gap between old and new plywood with Marine polyester putty. Sand the old floor down to bare wood, around the permiter of the new plywood. Now mix up some poly resin and paint the new floor and bare old floor and lay FG cloth over it. Saturate the cloth with resin and fill the weave with resin and let harden. One more coat of resin is rcommended.

I have the resin anyway, so i might just glass the whole section, I could even use a white cotton t shirt to glass, if the cloth is too expensive. What ever you put that resin on will turn to glass.

Is this the same stuff? At $20 for 3' x 6' it seems too good to be true? Have you used it for a while? I am concerned that it will fall apart in the Florida sun.

Same stuff, their shipping was a little more than the other place for me, I penny pinched it.

Our seasons up here aren't as harsh as yours so I can't comment. I understand the sun down there does murderous things to outdoor materials.

It's a 72 inch roll, so a "yard" is 72" x 3 ft.

It's $20 for 3' x 6'. 3' length by 72" wide roll. At that price, I'm now considering using it rather then paint.

I just finished glassing my deck, and used Durabak to coat. This stuff is very impressive..
