How bad are these scratches?

What is the purpose of the anti-foilaging paint for again? I know this boat was moored in a previous life.

Looking at this one as well but its 7k more. Don't know if the scratches are worth that much.

What is that plastic looking thing at the keel called? I assume it's there for scratch preventing. Looks like it would drag the boat down in speed.

That is a keel guard, and a very nice thing to have indeed. I need to pick me up one of those.

For the 1st pics, I can barely see any scratches, so I guess that means they aren't too bad. Maybe it is the white on white and my laptop screen. The bottom paint scratches also aren't too bad. Just looks (from here) to be coming towards a new coat of paint.

Then again, I'm comparing yours to mine:

the third pic looks like it could use some marine tex on those scratches.

Do they have any of those boating clubs you can join for a year or two wherever you live so you can get a better sense of boating, types of boats, and boat wear and tear before you actually buy a boat?

For example, look at the Nashville Boat Club and follow some of the links for others around the country.

willy,

I plan on signing up at the school of hard knocks.

cpubud,

Will the marine tex bring the boat back to it's "new look" condition?

What about the bottom paint (anit-foiling?) that is peeling?

the marine tex will fill the scratchs to prevent water intrusion ,and yes look good again if done right. follow directions. the bottom paint only needs to be redone if the boat is going to bee left in the water at a marina .if it is trailered dont worry about it.

Marine tex will not bring to like new. You would need to patch the scratches with color matched gel coat.

Spectrum color sells color matched gel kits
http://www.spectrumcolor.com/

They don't have all manufacturers and even then, the color match doesn't account for fading, but it comes pretty close.

Usually scratch repairs require lots of patience (tinting, sanding and buffing) not especially difficult but getting an exact color match can be.

Re: How bad are these fiberglass scratches?

I fyou wish to get your hands dirty and repaint the bottom, head on over to the boat building section of this forum and read some thread of other people who have painted their boats. If you trailer (which in the pics you seem to), then normal paint will be okay. Do your reading and you can have a nice new paint job in a weekend afternoon for the price of a 1/2 gallon of paint and some fiberglass filler.

They look cosmetic to me, nothing more. You can fix them, as described in other replies. Then, as a new boater, you'll get to add new ones. Nothing you took pictures of would put me off the boat at all.

If you want a scratch-free boat, buy a new one, then the only scratches on it will be the ones you put on it. Think of this boat as pre-scratched.

Like CA said, the scratches and bottom paint are non issues at this point, so if you like the boat buy it.

You'll put many more scratches in it during the first season, so just enjoy whatever you buy and don't stress over it.

Actually, if it were me, I would not even fix those. You are a new boater and will put some scratch on it. It is only normal and I will be surprised if you dont, "everyone" does... You can consider repair those scratch and any new you put in after a season or two of good use. That way you know you are doing it in a boat you like and your learning curve is at the top... good luck!!!

Looks like you're getting the same answers in both threads about this.
