Re: will not start

Probably has glazed over points from age. Give it a full tuneup and be it runs fine.

Re: will not start

It could be condensation on all the contacts in the distributor. I have that issue a couple times a season I keep a small can of Water Displacement formulation #40 on board (WD40). But if you have'nt already done so what The Don mentioned is probably the best remeady.

Water Displacement formulation #40

Hahaha...... Wow... Haven't heard anybody say that in a while.

I'm still trying to figure out what the PB mean in PB Blaster.

I think it means Pretty Ballsy

Showing your age when you say water displacement # 40 hah.

I keep sand paper on the boat also, sand the points and look in the cap, rotor making good contact? Sand all the contacts a little adjust the points maybe they wore a little and see if that fixes it.

Make sure all the plugs are in good also.

One trick i do every year before i go on the water is start the boat with water going to the drive in pitch black darkness, and look at the motor running to see if there is a lightning storm. That will tell you if you need a new set of wires.

It's what i do and should not be done if your afraid of the dark, keep a good flashlight in your pocket. You don't want the buggeyman to get ya.

Good luck !

Re: will not start

I was justing waiting for the opportunity to use that wd phrase. I read in a mag last week but the trick does work after everything is cleaned from corrosion to eliminate condensation on electrical.I'm glad it got a laugh!. PB I think it means peanut butter because that what it turns into after about a day or two when exposed to air.

No offense, but I can't imagine having to spray inside your distributor a couple of times a season to eliminate condensation. Have you tried a new cap, etc?

Re: will not start

Is the dwell of the points set to spec? Is the timing to spec? Once those are set, you can adjust the idle mixture.
You did do a compression test to make sure it was ok didn't you?

Re: will not start

i didn't do a compression test will do tomorrow the points were done by someone who knows how to set them so i guess they are right he hooked it up to a meter.. one last thing when i run with muffs hooked up it starts to run hot the guy i bought it from said it had no thermostat. would that make it run hot or what. i will also check the timing tomorrow to see if that is it i adjusted the valves but still hear one make a noise is it better to run it and adjust them.

Re: will not start

Sounds like you have a lot more problems than you bargined for.
First thing to check in any marine overheat is the impeller and the raw water pump. In your boat, it's between the upper and lower unit of the outdrive.
With the thermostat out, it should run colder, not hotter. But there are a lot of things that could cause an overheat. Start with the impeller and we can go from there.

It would be not in that pic. Its in the middle of the outdrive hanging off the back of the boat.

Re: will not start

Was the engine ever run with out water to the outdrive? That's all it would take to destroy the impeller and pump.

Head up to the Adults Only Sticky at the top of the forum. Download service manual #6 and start doing some reading. Section 3C covers the pump repair.
