Electric Demand ?

It would seem to me that the price of electric should be falling. With so many factories and business's closing, wouldn't this cause less of a demand for electrical energy? However we are considered to be in an energy crisis? Is this logical or just the medications I'm taking? Any other view points?........SS

They say they need to produce more , cause in the summer people turn on the air conditioners.

Must be some good medications, better living thru chemistry. Only good thing about getting hurt legal meds.

Re: Electric Demand ?

With all the auto manufacturing, steel mills, stamping plants, and other smaller plants shutting down, some people who don't have a job will not be using their A/C. Just like the demand for gas is down. With millions of people not driving to work each day reduced the demand for gas. With the plant closings and no products being shipped, diesel is now under $2 a gallon where as it was up above $5 last year.

I had a bro-in-law that worked at the General James A Gavin power plant in Gallipolis Ohio. Its basically 2 coal fired plants. It was built back in the 60's and during this whole time, both sides of the plant never ran at the same time. The reason for that is the emissions. If both sides were to be fired up, they would get cited for going over the limit on emissions. Some plants will drop off the grid if the demand is not needed. For reduced amount of output, they can throttle down a couple of turbines to run just a few to maintain an output.

I do know when and if things pick up again, there will be the need. For now though, I don't buy into their understanding of an electrical energy crisis.

BTW, A/C's of today are a whole lot more efficient than the ones that were made 5 years ago. Even changing to the CFL's has lowered consumption. When I changed all mine to CFL's, my bill went down in a very noticeable way.

Re: Electric Demand ?

It is decreasing, just maybe not where you are.

From Chattanooga Times Free Press'

Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 , 10:07 a.m. TVA to cut rates 7 percent in April

Re: Electric Demand ?

Our public service commission is trying to figure out why people's bills went up 50-100% this winter.

A BGE official noted that there had been nearly 300 more hours this winter of temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. BGE customers had to contend with 40 more hours of temperatures that dipped below 20 degrees,

Big deal...

Another issue here is that our power company buys twice a year. Last buy? You guessed it, June/July 2008 when prices were at their highest mark ever. So they are claiming that kwh prices will decrease this summer..Except they want another 8% rate increase!

Of course on top of this, the parent company sold 50% of their nuclear plants to the French, and avoided bankruptcy by doing so. Avoiding so well in fact that the top end managers are going to receive millions in bonuses.

Meanwhile 84,000 people or so face power cutoffs April 1 unless the deadline is extended.

I am really praying for a breakout in solar/wind tech in my lifetime so I can see companies like this get shellacked.
