Heres a true story . Today about 5 minutes before the final bell ending school my wife saw a girl run by her door and then she heard the girl fall and hit the floor real hard with her head. She rushed outside to look and the girl was on her back bleeding from the head. So the wife does as required and calls the office for immediate responce from the office and school nurse. Well after a few minutes several other teachers gather around the girl who is awake and someone says it would be best to call 911 after they discover the school nurse HAS ALREADY LEFT FOR THE DAY. The head principal has a rule that no teacher can call 911 without that teacher being held accountable to pay the MEDIC BILL. The story ends after a sub principal came and gave the ok about 20 minutes after the accident, Go figure

You would think.... with all the kids with cell phones (all ages) that someone could have dialed 911. :(

Stupid, petty principal's rules. Principal's can't allocate financial charges based on responsibility, judges and courts do that.

I grew up in a household with my mom being a teacher. She taught for 37 years. It always seemed each year policies were changed and altered. She had many horror stories on how the system works. Ken did right in summing it up in one word "CRAZY"

Changes in School Board or Administration always seem to produce changes in rules. Must be how the "new guy/gal" puts a personal stamp on the school.

I agree. I doubt that the Principal can legally follow through on this one.

If he/she could, I would think that a rule like this would leave the school and/or principal open for a law suit.

Is the school responsible for paying medical bills if a student is injured on the grounds? Is calling 911 for emergency help billable? I don't get it, why on earth would the principal initiate such falicy? I'm pretty sure the answer all these questions is no. I think the parents should have recieved the second phone call after the 911.

sounds to me like yall need a new principal ......and "sub-principal for sure.

if it were my kid i would want some answers...............and i would start by going to the superintendent......after that i would go to the board.

of course i would be very very angry...........especially at the lethargic response..........that dont cut it in my book.

So the girl hit her head hard, went unconscious, and they wait 20 minutes to call for medical attention?

The school district needs to address their emergency response plans.

The girl's parents need to get media attention on this ASAP to get changes.

The school district better cross their fingers - can they say subdural hematoma?

Did they not learn anything with the tragic death of Natasha Richardson?

rules are fine and dandy BUT there is always the exception. bleeding from the head should qualify as one.

If this is a public school, the budget is public record. Check out what funding is earmarked for, like office renovation, sabbatical coverage, holiday decorations, etc..... and then ask why funding isn't set aside for students' immediate emergency care in the event of an on-campus accident. I would also investigate if parents were made aware of this policy of making educators responsible for deciding if professional emergency care is necessary with the cost being the overiding factor.

Re: Kid got hurt messin around at school

Sounds like an easy thing to do is keep the school nurse on school grounds until all the students have left the property.

A kid steals something from another student, the school handles it and does not call the police

A kid gets into a fight, the school handles it and does not call the police

A kid has guns or drugs at school,,,,,,they have the police handle it.

Just what kind of message does this type of discipline send to our kids?

To me, anything that is illegal to do as an adult should be handled the same for students. Send the message that you do the crime, you do the time.

Many schools have different policies that have come about due to law suits. This is just one of the reasons why schools are so cautious about making decisions due to past actions.

Dumb Principal. Very dumb principal.

I think If he were the Principal at my child's school, I would send a letter to every personal injury attorney within a 100 miles of the school, informing them of this policy. I would also copy the school board on every one of those letters. My guess is that the policy would be rescinded about 5 seconds after the school board recived the first copy of one of the letters.

I also think that if I were one of the teachers involved, I would have called 911 immediately after learning that there was no nurse available. As for the principal and his rule ... yeah bubba, good luck on that one.

Re: Kid got hurt messin around at school

Part of the problem is politics in the school system. Right now to save money hundreds of jobs are being eliminated. Soon they will start on teachers. The school system gives to much power to the principals for one thing. This is the same principal that told a teacher who broke her foot trying to break up a fight that she couldnt apply for workers comp if she mentioned a fight was part of the reason she got hurt, It makes bad "press" for the school. This principal has made many enemys being new to the job since last year, The wife has worked with many principals and says this one is the biggest flake she has ever had. I hope she ends up having to leave due to complaints but covering up stuff is an art with our school system. Another principal years ago told all of the teachers that if they were assaulted by a student they couldnt report it to the police unless he said it was ok. I got the word back (he knows me) that if the wife was ever hurt by an assault THAT I WOULD BE CALLING THE POLICE AND SHOWING UP AT THE SCHOOL. HE COULD GIVE ORDERS TO THE TEACHERS BUT HE COULDNT GIVE THEM TO ME. I worked in the system too but in another department.

Re: Kid got hurt messin around at school

My suggestion to the teachers at your wife's school, is that they ask their principal if he understands the significance and penalties involved in "obstruction of justice." Telling an employee that they may not report a crime is about as dumb as it gets. Next time, forget telling him that he can't control you in that regard - tell him that he has zero authority to tell anyone not to report a crime.

As for the workers comp, my guess is that the school made some argument that the teacher should not have involved herself in breaking up a fight. The position would have most likely been along the lines of deviating from her job description, violating some policy not to take such action, etc.

On the other hand, if teachers at the school routinely break up fights and management knows that, regardless of what is in an employee manual or other documentation, there would likely be a good case for the injury to be considered to be work related. I suppose that would also be true if the teacher could demonstrate that significant injury would have occured, had she not broken the fight up.

One of the reasons that employers engage in this knid of nonsense, is because their insurers will sometimes tell them things that are simply incorrect. I had such a situation while running the business operations of a company once. I won't bore you with the details, but we had a new WC insurer try to get us to do something that was clearly a bad idea. In their attempt, they quoted a Louisiana law in a way that it simply did not apply. Had we done what they wanted, we would have violated a number of Federal laws and standards, and we would have opened ourselves up to major lawsuits.

I told the WC insurer that we would not comply and I spelled out the reason why. I never heard another peep from them on the matter and they never tried to mess with us in any way. Simply put, they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar and they knew it.

No this was at an east side middle school, but from the student make up and lack of others who have moved is no better than any west side school. Its at about 75% reduced lunch which shows most come from very low income familys.Im sick of the way news stories about our schools are squashed. When over 20k in computers were stolen from this same school last year NOTHING was said in any news media about it. If you have been in charlotte long you know what Im talking about...

To the original poster. I would have used my cell to report it to 911 as a "concerned citizen".
Next, I would have called the local TV station and asked for a reporter who would like to do a story about the school system policy which REQUIRES the principal and teachers to let 20 minutes to go by before calling 911 for a head injury. Makes no difference on how it happened; head injuries are serious.
Reference the movie star who died recently after falling while skiing.....
