Please help, I am new with the boating scene. I was given a Glastron Carlson CV16 boat. It has a Mercury 140 HP M1150 motor. all of the controls and seats were taken apart but appear to be all with the boat. the trailer is in good condition. how do I know if this boat is worth spending the time and money to repair. I was able to get the motor repair book, but that does not help with the actual boat/vessel? what do I do, and where could I go for help with this. What all does a boat need to run, what kind of fuel, and does it need abattery like a car? I am not afraid to work or "get my hands dirty' and I can turn a wrench. I live in the Annapolis, MD area. Can anyone help with this?

A cool Glastron and a big 'ol Merc 140 would certainly seem to be a worthwhile project to me! You've come to the right place for help but we need some pictures and some more specific questions. Go to Sears and grab yourself a marine starting battery. The motor will run on 87 octane gas mixed 50:1 with 2-stroke oil. There is a thread on here called "awakening a sleeping outboard". Do a search for that and read it as it has some helpful tips to getting your motor running for the first time assuming it's been laid up for a while.

IBOATS is a great forum that can offer you a ton of help, I just joined. Another site for Glastron Carlsons is www.carlsonspeed.com you can find just about anything specifically related to the Carlsons there. Ive been restoring a CV21 for a couple years now that I will be postiing about here later.

Hmm, seats removed...it probably needs some deck work, maybe stringers.
Clean it out and take some pics.

With that 140hp engine special attention is needed to make certain the transom is good. But its all enjoyable work once you become familiar with boat projects.

Post questions on the engine in the outboard section,
you'll get good expert advise there.

Let's not forget www.classicglastron.com , which is also a great resource for these hulls.

Post some pics... there's lots of members here at iboats with many years of experience restoring boats.

Lots of us Glastron owners out here to tap for advice and encouragement.

Boats are similar in ways to cars in what they need to run, with some specifics. If you do anything, don't run more than midgrade fuel in the motor, premium is not going to do any good in a marine engine, especially a 2 stroke.

Glastron built some nice boats, but like anything else, they have their issues. For a 30 year old transom, mine was only delaminating from the outer fiberglass skin, I could have hung a motor on it without issue. It was made out of redwood plywood. However, since I pulled the top off my boat and had to do the deck and stringers, I figured it would be just as well to do it all.

The first things you'll want to do with that boat is inspect it and decide if you have the patience and the budget and space to work on it. My budget is so tight that I'm into my project for 4 years now and I haven't gotten anything done other than most of the tear down. I'm hoping to get the transom done and if I really get moving, the stringers this summer.
