I have a 1964 18 HP johnson and the motor has a fly wheel with teeth on it but does not have a stater on it just a pull cord but looks like at one time there might have been a bracket in there to have starter

my question being is that if there was starter on this motor then it should be able to charge my trolling motor battery right

does anyone no if this motor at the time had a starter
Model # is FD18E

Re: Here is a off the wall question

An electric starter was available for the FD18. Whether yours had one or not, I do not know. However, as far as I know, no generator was available for that outboard. You can fit yours with a starter, but finding the parts can be a challenge.

So, the answer to your question is no. There's no charging circuit on that outboard like the stators used on later outboards.

The reality is that a well-charged battery will start that outboard many dozens of times without being recharged. The generators that were on some of the larger engines of the day put out about 10 amps, max. So, they weren't of that much help, either.

If you were thinking about keeping a trolling motor battery charged, that won't happen with any of the 50s and 60s johnnyrudes.

the E indicates there was a starter at one time.
