i am looking at a boat to purchase and it has the volvo penta 5.0Fl motor. it is in a 1995 caravelle bow rider.

does anyone know anything about these engines?
are they solid engines?
do they often have problems?
easy to work on?

anything you can give me would be helpful. thanks.

Hi There,
Noticed this is your first post so welcome to the forum!
If you look at the top of this section you will see there are instructions on how to post a question.
If you come back with a bit more info you may get a better reaction.
There are good ppl here that really know their stuff.
I have new to me Volvo , there is one thing that I found out. Look to see if there is a qualified shop in the area that is equipped to service your prospective boat.

Welcome.

I believe that is a Ford 302. Ford motors ar not used anymore but not because they were bad. The VP outdrives are the best but need regular maintainence like all boat motors and drives. With a boat that age, and without boat experience, I would recommend having it inspected by a Marine Mechanic.

Good luck to you, It sounds like it could be a nice Boat. Previous care will decide in the end.

Personally, I like the Volvo Penta outdrives the best. I'm not sure if it was available in 95, but is it an SX Cobra outdrive? If so, I can tell from first-hand experience that those outdrives hold up even against the biggest rocks, steel pipes, etc. The engine itself is great, well, Volvo claims to have smoother shifting in that year (smoother than MerCruiser), but to be honest I really didn't notice. I am referring to a 1997 Baha Cruisers 225 Weekender, that came equipped with a Volvo Penta 3.0L. We (my parents) bought it brand new.
The first engine was just too small for the boat, and after we changed it to a 4.3L, never had another issue with it in 11 years, just your normal maintenance.
