I found the US Marine swim platform I wanted for my Bayliner project. I was given an actual shipping cost of $40. I thought that was high, and remembered when on the UPS website, the shipping calculator asks if the receiving address is a business address. So I asked the seller to get a new estimate using my employers address. The shipping cost dropped to $23. That's a $17 savings!

So if you have a business address you can use for shipping, be sure to tell the vendor to adjust the shipping for business address and pocket the savings!

It'll work everwhere zach. Both UPS and FedEx charge big premiums for home delivery. They most often have to leave things on the porch, etc and their claims for non-delivery are huge.

The only problem with directing deliveries to a place of business, the address does not match the billing addy of your credit card. You often have to jump thru hoops to register a delivery address that merchants will accept.

Also make sure you have permission from your employer (if you're not self-employed) to receive packages at work... sometimes incoming equipment comes via a receiving system that gets an asset tag put on it, or records made as if the stuff belongs to the company....

well my dad works with my uncle.. they both have an office at their houses.. so technically my house is and his house are business addresses just the way they set it up.. so my address for billing is the same as his.

Well as long as the business has a UPS/FED EX account that will work. I still have a good relationship with my old job and I can have things sent there but....... I do like the door to door service so, I pay for it ;)

Does the UPS/FedEx system actually alter the price by the EXACT address? So, if I get a business account using my home address, all e-tailers will reflect the cheaper rate, since it will appear as a business address when calculating shipping?

Well to get the reduced rate from UPS it is actually based on number of packages shipped.

When I was working at a motorcycle dealership our UPS rates went down and I called figuring there might be a software problem..... one day something cost $6.00 and the next it was $5.20 ..... depending on where stuff got shipped it went down if it went to another major account holder.

Just getting a UPS account will not help.....

Ya i have to use my business name, i had to call ups and give them prof of my business to first time i used it, eBay is always a domestic delivery but northern tool and places i used my Business name are all business rates.
