Greetings.

I was recently given a two screw fishing boat with a pair of Volvo AQ 130d engines with matching 280 outdrives. I'm getting ready for the fishing season and replaced the impellars on both raw water pumps. These engines do not have radiators. The port side engine runs great and stays cool however, the starboard side engine is not pulling any water from the giant tub I have the sterndrive sitting in. I am able to blow on the inlet hose at the raw water filter and make bubbles in the tub verifying that there is no obstruction but I cannot rule out a possible air leak along the way. I did replace a leaky cylinder block drain tap that was leaking with a brass plug before I switched the raw water impellar...Any thoughts, I can't figure this one out.

Thanks,

Charlie

No Water at all? You may want to hook it to muffs and see if any water comes out the exhaust. You may want to check the hose connection where the hose on the transum shield connects to the top of the intermediate assembly, those will corrode and cause you to suck air. loosen the hose and pull it off to see how the fitting looks. Also that hose could be collapsing or kinking cutting off the water supply.

If you are getting no water at all might go back to the water pump.

Good luck to you.

The water pump is spinning like a champ, I don't think that's it. There must be an air leak somewhere. I'll check the hose and the thermostat area for corrosion.

UPDATE!

I'm continuing my process of elimination being guided by all the other posts on this site regarding the overheating issue.

I placed the water intake hose at the raw water pump in a bucket of water and the pump worked great, lots of water coming out of the exhaust and after a couple of minutes an empty five gallon bucket.:)

Now I checked the hose the leads from the transom to the pump and that was good. The nipple that is inserted into the hose is solid too. That leaves me with the two other hoses (and the hose connection) on the back of the sterndrive by the intermediate housing as my last two options, right???

I did notice the sterndrive oil getting milky after running it in the big tub. Could the cooling issue be related or is it more likely that I need to replace the seals at the prop? I did do a pressure test on the sterndrive and found no leaks.

Thanks for your help and suggestions,

Charlie

I had a 280 outdrive that always seemed to overheat when the rpm's got to 4000rpm's. It would be fine at 3900rpm but as soon as it would go over 3900 it would start to overheat. Being a novice it took nearly a year to figure it out. When I did, someone commented about a loud whistling and naturally as soon as she said it I could hear it too and immediately it started to overheat.

Turns out the high rpms would create such a vacuum that at 4000 that it would suck air through the seals. I had the outdrive resealed and haven't had a problem since.

Guitar Charlie
I just purchased a 1976 Glastron bowrider with an AQ130D280 engine and a 270 outdrive and I'm having over heating issues at 900 rpms. It seems like no water is getting to engine. I read your post will try to check water pump to see if it works. I'll pull off the inlet hose and run another hose from pump to a bucket of water. then I'll continue to go through stps eliminating the possibilities. just wondering did you ever figure it out?
