I don't know if anyone can help answer this, but I thought I would try.

I have this 1988 Evinrude 28hp Model Number E28ESLCCR. It ran just fine when I first bought it in late 07. Last year about half way through the season. I noticed a severe loss in power, when I first took off with it. It seemed to me like it was only running on one cylinder. So I continued on the ride and after about 20 min boom (I don't mean it made a noise or anything, it just kicked in) a huge power gain and the boat takes off. It threw me back in the boat. Drives fine for the rest of the day, about 2 or 3 hours of driving. Then for the next week or so it started up and ran fine from the get go. Then it started doing it again and again. About 20 minutes in to the ride the power would come in and the boat seem to run fine for the rest of that day of boating. Now it does it every time I start it and go.

Anyone have any idea's? If anyone can tell me where to start looking for my problem that would help. Thanks Nicholas

Sounds like a coil or powerpack not working when it's cold, then as the motor warms up and warms up the parts, it starts to work. I am sure more who are more qualified will ring in shortly, but that's my thought on it.

If it runs okay some of the time it probably isn't compression but that is always good to know just to keep tabs on the motor.

If you get a dental syringe with a plastic tip(CVS) you can shoot alittle gas in the cylinders and if the motor runs normally for a second then you know it is a dirty carb, when you squirt the dead cylinder it will pick way up and the good cylinder will make it run bad/stall.

Confirm spark by getting a spark tester, a couple bucks at any auto parts store, if you don't have spark start looking at wires to make sure everything is like it should be with no frayed wires or bad insulation, if the wiring checks out it is probably an ignition module.

I would suggest you get a manual too, OMC not Clymers, Seloc or anything on CD, it will pay for itself immediately and help you solve your problem as it tells you how to check individual components and you can figure out what is actually bad without guessing and buying a bunch of parts you don't need.
